MSc Corporate Finance

It focuses on two main fields of finance: corporate finance and financial engineering.

What will you learn?

At NEOMA Business School, the MSc Corporate Finance is a 15-month, full-time programme taught in English, with a long track two-year option available.

Students will learn primarily through practical application, with case studies, business games and a mandatory four-month professional placement, which can be completed either in France or abroad.

Who should study the MSc Corporate Finance?

MSc Finance, Investment and Wealth Management

A career in finance, investment and wealth management revolves around financial planning for an individual or family. This may involve managing personal finance, credit and investment.

The MSc Finance, Investment and Wealth Management degree is an internationally focused finance degree intended for ambitious students who want to work in investment, private equity and asset management.

What will you learn?

In the MSc Finance, Investment & Wealth Management, students will gain the skills they need to properly manage portfolios and risks in order to satisfy clients’ concerns.

During this degree, you will develop a strong knowledge of private wealth management, an understanding of the real estate market; and relevant skills in all aspects of an investment decision process, including planning, legal and tax impacts and performance.

At NEOMA Business School, students can choose to follow one of two tracks as part of the 15-month programme: the real estate and wealth management track, or the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) track. However, the CFA track is only open to students who have already completed the CFA level one qualification.

NEOMA Business School is one of the few French business schools that is an official partner of the CFA Institute in France. Students on the CFA track will also have the option to earn a double degree with the University of San Diego (USA).

The school also has a partnership with PwC Luxembourg – a member of the ‘Big Five’ accounting films – which works directly with NEOMA Business School to offer relevant training.

MSc Financial Markets & Technology

The programme prepares students to work in risk management banks and a wide range of financial institutions. It will give you a strong foundation in data science for finance, behavioural finance and fintech.

Yiwen Jin is a 24-year-old double master’s degree student from Zhejiang, mainland China. She is currently studying an MSc International Management at Bocconi University and MA Banking and Finance in St. Gallen in Switzerland.

She said: “From the start, I was determined to apply for a double degree for my master’s. I believed this would be a unique experience. I would get to live and study in a new place, which is rather different from just traveling there.”

Take advantage of international experiences

After studying abroad in the UK for her undergraduate degree, Yiwen was eager to continue her international education. She liked the idea of studying in the US and first came across Italy’s Bocconi University while browsing Yale University’s website, as Bocconi is one of Yale’s partner schools.

“Bocconi is the only European school I applied to. I received offers from both Bocconi and an Ivy League school,” said Yiwen.

To decide between the two schools, Yiwen contacted alumni on LinkedIn to ask about their experiences. After doing this, she chose Bocconi University.

Yiwen said: “My first impression of Bocconi is that it is very international. As a Bocconi student, you have plenty of international opportunities, such as double degrees, exchange programmes and research projects.”

Understand what it’s like to work and study in a diverse environment

If you decide to do a double master’s degree, where you’ll study will depend on the programme you undertake.

Bocconi University in Italy currently offers three types of double degree.

The Future Leaders International Double Degree undergraduate programme joins Bocconi’s BSc in International Economics and Management (BIEM) with a degree at Guanghua School of Management of Peking University in Beijing, to form a four-year course.

Alessia Fontanari studied the China Master in International Management (China MiM) at Fudan University in Shanghai, mainland China. She said: "It was a great learning experience, and very different from the traditional exchanges. This kind of situation allows you to truly integrate into the host country”.

The graduate double degree offers graduate students the possibility to spend the first year at Bocconi, and the second year in another prestigious partner school specialising in their field of interest.

Yiwen, who is studying the graduate double degree, said: “I am so lucky I can study a programme I really like. Because of staying in a diverse environment, I know myself much better and I know what I want for my career and my life.”

Finally, the law double degree offers fourth-year law students the possibility to spend their fifth and final year of the Integrated Master of Arts in Law in another prestigious partner school, specialising in their field of interest.

You’ll have experiences that will help shape your career path

Studying abroad can expand your mindset, helping you realise your career goals and learn practical, transferrable skills.

By studying a double master’s degree, you will study in two different countries, giving you even more scope to enjoy new experiences.

Armando Cilento is an international management graduate who obtained his double degree at Bocconi and HEC Paris. He said: “This experience was an occasion to put myself to the test, to become part of another culture. It was like having a double passport".

“Thanks to this double degree programme, I can push myself and learn two different fields for my master’s in the same length of time for other single master’s programmes. I receive double the knowledge and double the happiness.”

She added: “By studying and living abroad, I can better understand people from different cultural backgrounds and also let others know my thoughts and understanding.”

Study two different degrees to build a diverse skillset

One of the main benefits of the double degree is that you will get to learn two completely different subjects at two international universities. This helps you to gain a unique, diverse skillset which will make you stand out in the graduate job market.

Bocconi’s international management programme is very interactive and aims to encourage collaborative approaches to problem solving.

“There are lots of case studies and group work activities that can help develop soft skills including quick learning, time management, effective communication, team work and leadership,” said Yiwen.

The teaching varies from module to module, and some aspects of the programme will be completed online. Yiwen explains that each of the professors at Bocconi University have different teaching styles and experiences, which only adds to the diversity of the programme.

She said: “During my year studying at Bocconi, I learnt so many interpersonal skills. My first presentation at St. Gallen for integration week was an unexpected success thanks to Bocconi’s training.”

Push yourself out of your comfort zone

Although there are many benefits of studying a double master’s degree, the programme is challenging and will push you beyond your comfort zone.

The double degree programmes contain many group assignments and presentations and students are expected to do additional reading around the subject outside of class.

“The teaching at Bocconi is very rigorous and intense because it contains many core courses, internship, foreign language study and thesis,” said Yiwen. “To some extent, this double master’s degree is quite different from my bachelor’s degree, but I am determined to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself.”

In a world where we seem to be bombarded with negative news, sometimes it’s quite nice to hear about the good things.

University is one place where people’s career dreams and life-long ambitions are envisaged. But what does it take to achieve your dreams? We spoke to three University of Lima graduates to find out more.

Mónica Liyau – creator of Impactando Vidas (Making an Impact on Lives)

What started off as a hobby ended with a world ping pong championship title for Mónica Liyau. However, after a cancer diagnosis in 2015, Mónica made the decision to combine her passion for ping pong with her desire to educate young children on the importance of sport and what it can do for not just their physical health, but their mental health too.

“I was feeling empty inside and wanted to make a change in my life," said the University of Lima business administration graduate.

As a mother of two and business owner of the prestigious candy marketing company, Golozzini, Mónica utilized her business administration expertise and founded Impactando Vidas (Making an Impact on Lives) in 2016. Created on the basis of Olympic values, the program has provided public schools around the country with 400 professional cemented ping pong tables, 7,500 ping pong paddles, and 20,000 ping pong balls.

It also gives talks, runs workshops and trains physical education teachers within the schools to help develop not just the students’ self-esteem and motivation, but improve their academic abilities as well.

“It’s scientifically proven that ping pong is the sport that most develops the human brain,” said Mónica.

“Although we are an athletic program, we not only contribute to physical and psychomotor development, but almost 100 percent of teachers within the schools say our social program helps students concentrate and read better,” she added.

With the support of the Ministry of Education in Peru, the program works to fulfil many Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations General Assembly.

Since the program’s establishment three years ago, thousands of school children, in over 100 public schools across 12 regions in Peru feel that their lives have changed for the better thanks to Impactando Vidas.

Almost 3,000 school children have taken part in regional tournaments of the Impactando Vidas program, 320 of which have gone on to compete in national school sports competitions. A further 25 have gone on to win such competitions, with seven becoming regional champions.

Nicholas Harmsen – general director of Crea+

University of Lima graduate Nicholas Harmsen is now the general director of Crea+, a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to educating school children in vulnerable areas in Peru.

After ten years of volunteering, the former industrial engineer student decided he wanted to give back even more and help transform local communities and society through Crea+.

The program recruits fully-committed creandos (professional volunteers) who dedicate their time and energy into going into public schools to teach.

“Each Saturday, we visit schoolchildren to teach them fun mathematics and multidisciplinary workshops, such as cooking, capoeira, dance, English, drama, speech, debate, football, mini-architects, craft, and more,” he said.

“So far, over 500 types of different workshops have been created. Such workshops have been classified according to motor, artistic, cognitive, and social-personal skills, and if a volunteer proposes a new type of workshop, we organize it.”

It’s not just the children who benefit from Crea+ either – the professional volunteers also see their own communication, teamwork and leadership skills develop as they work hard to help the children discover their talents and potential.

“This is very rewarding work that comes with great responsibility. I feel happy being surrounded by a great professional team who I learn from every day,” said Nicholas.

“The impact our work has on people is huge, and we’re convinced we will continue to bring about the changes that we want on a larger scale.

“We hope that more children in Peru believe in themselves so they can achieve their dreams.”

This year, the University of Lima hosted the program’s induction and training development for the next wave of professional volunteers.

Looking back on his time at the University of Lima, Nicholas is proud of his alma mater status and believes in the true value and importance education can have on an individual’s future endeavors.

Carolina Ward – founder of Conciencia

Having studied industrial engineering at the University of Lima, Carolina Ward decided to begin her very own business in the hope it would make others happy – a chocolate start-up business named, Conciencia.

In total admiration of Peru’s natural resources, Carolina hopes to educate chocolate lovers around the world about Peru’s rich biodiversity and what it can offer when it comes to raw, organic chocolate products.

Going from industrial engineering student to chocolate business founder is an interesting route – but Carolina most definitely has her reasons.

“The challenge was to combine the rigid, intellectual, and analytical side of industrial engineering that I had with the human aspect, directed toward healthy living, nutrition, and physical and spiritual well-being,” said Carolina.

Carolina frequently travels to the Amazon rainforest in order to educate and train farmers to grow raw cacao in the best way possible. Her small team includes a clinical nutritionist who helps Carolina and her business partner develop new recipes using additional superfoods and ingredients.

“The idea is to break the cliché that chocolate makes you fat and gives you acne, because it doesn’t. If made properly, it can be very healthy.

“Not only do we produce chocolate, we also promote a conscious lifestyle,” explained Carolina.

Working together with a non-governmental organization that runs after-school programs for school children, Carolina hosts her own educational workshops to do just that. From learning about the importance of sustainability of a business to understanding nutrition and what it takes to make the chocolate, she hopes it’s a positive way of giving back to the community that made her feel welcome.

In July this year, Conciencia won five awards at the International Chocolate Awards in Peru.

And when it comes to her experience at the University of Lima and how it shaped her into the person she is today, Carolina is beyond grateful – from making use of the university’s very own Fab Lab in order to create prototype molds for her business logo, to the help and support of the professors.

“The program awakened my curiosity and allowed me to understand how things work,” she said.

“Although I’m not an expert on agricultural engineering, I’ve learned a lot about such subject and that’s been thanks to the undergraduate program.”

Since graduating, Carolina has been invited back to the University of Lima to give talks on start-ups and her own experience.

One-year study formats with integrated international study and work experiences are becoming increasingly popular, so we spoke with Katherine Campbell and Samy Ahmed, both graduates of the M.S. in Global Commerce at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce about their experiences and how the M.S. in Global Commerce is making waves in the world of business education.

You can earn two degrees and one certificate within a year

There’s often a lot of talk about how the graduate job market is getting more competitive each year. As a result, many prospective students want their degree to offer unique learning opportunities, from internships with global organizations, to innovative technologies that offer the most up-to-date learning experiences.

While some institutions offer the opportunity to study a dual degree or double degree, there aren’t many that offer the possibility of graduating with three qualifications – all within the space of one year.

You’ll be able to launch yourself into a global career trajectory

Before you’re even accepted onto a particular graduate business degree program, you’ll be expected to have at least two years’ worth of professional experience under your belt.

Although it’s not impossible to get the experience before embarking on further education it can be a relief to learn that some graduate business degrees, such as the McIntire’s School of Commerce M.S. in Global Commerce, require little or no work experience at all.

“I joined this tech giant three months ago and embarked on an eight-week business trip across the globe to recruit top talent to support our organization.

“I have a very hectic schedule that really excites me. Today I’m in San Francisco, tomorrow I could be in Chicago, Beijing or New York City!

“I have to credit McIntire for the two main skills I use on a daily basis at work: being very flexible and open-minded.”

Samy says that at Lenovo, new technologies are rolled out every month. “Being able to quickly adapt to new changes represents a big competitive advantage you need to succeed in such a fast environment.

“My time at McIntire has helped me stretch my boundaries and question what I wrongly believed were indisputable truths: Nothing is forever,” he says.

“On the more technical side, I've used many of the concepts taught in the Excel course on a daily basis on my current project,” she adds.

Business schools are also working hard to create and develop talented graduates who are capable of taking on the challenges and opportunities that accompany the country’s rising entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Johannesburg is a buzzing city that loves to live fast

From hipster coffee shops to fashion boutiques, art galleries to museums, botanical gardens to theaters, there’s a lot to get excited about in the city, and there’s definitely enough to keep you busy during your time here.

When it comes to bright lights and late nights, Johannesburg is home to some of South Africa’s most exciting entertainment and party scenes. Bassline and Artivist are located in the popular suburbs of the city near the University of the Witwatersrand, and is a real hub for students and locals alike who love all things music, especially jazz and Afro-beat, as well as comedy and impromptu music sessions.

Moving to Johannesburg to live and study is an exciting adventure, but just like all major and unfamiliar cities, it’s always good to take precautions. As long as you act and behave like you would in any new city – which means no showing off expensive possessions, or having large amounts of money in your wallet or purse, you should be ok.

Universities in Johannesburg, such as the University of the Witwatersrand consider student safety to be of paramount importance and have several protection services in place for students across its campus.

Johannesburg is one of the most affordable student cities in the world

In the QS Best Student Cities 2019 ranking, Johannesburg ranked ninth in the world for affordability, reflecting its relatively low tuition fees and living costs while making sure to not compromise on its high standards of living and quality of education.

University of the Witwatersrand (Wits University) is ranked second in South Africa in the QS BRICS University Rankings 2019 and is Johannesburg’s highest-ranked institution. It’s also home to a growing postgraduate student community with over a third of students studying a postgraduate degree.

Around 39,000 students study at the university, and Emman Raj Munduthara, an MSc in Computer Science student from India, is one of them. When asked what made him decide to study at Wits University, he considered its international exposure and top reputation to be the biggest factors.

While Hwajin Sung, a student studying Honors in Portuguese believes the education at the university “well-structured and developed.”

Johannesburg is full of exciting business opportunities

Johannesburg is South Africa’s largest populated city and is an ever-evolving international hub full of networking, internship and job training opportunities. There is a huge demand for those with industry talent, knowledge and skills – especially recent graduates.

Salary prospects are also good, which is something to bear in mind should you want to stay once your university experience eventually comes to an end.

Johannesburg has an incredibly diverse nature

Such cultural immersion in Johannesburg today is both vigorous and uplifting, thanks to the uniting of 11 official languages, diverse cultures and vibrant people. “The people are really friendly, and you get to experience other people’s religion and cultures, which is great. Campus safety is also good,” said Isheanopa Chipumha, an Accounting Science student at Wits University.

It also has a fantastic arts and culture scene

For those who love all things art and culture, Johannesburg has lots to offer. In recent years, Johannesburg has seen itself transform into a cosmopolitan city where its arts and culture scene takes center stage in showcasing Johannesburg’s history and personality.

The central suburb of Braamfontein is where you’ll find the Wits Theater, Joburg Theater and the Wits Art Museum. Elsewhere in the city you can visit the Apartheid Museum, Constitution Hill as well as the National Cultural History Museum to better your understanding of the city’s and country’s past.

Once a year between the months of September and November, Johannesburg is illuminated in magnificent shades of purple hue, thanks to hundreds of Jacaranda trees that line the city’s parks and streets.

Melville, Munro Drive in Houghton, Jameson and Victoria Avenues in Melrose, as well as James and Ethel Gray Park are where you can get the best views of this yearly phenomenon.

Johannesburg tends to boast pleasant weather all-year-round

For many international students, the thought of living abroad in a country that boasts a fairly pleasant climate all-year-round sounds absurd.

However, in Johannesburg, the average temperature for most of the year is 71 degrees Fahrenheit, which means winters tend to be short and mild, so snow is unfortunately a very rare sight. Students from the Northern Hemisphere will have to get used to the concept of a hot Christmas too, as the seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere and the summer months of November-January can be as hot as 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

You’ll no doubt experience a South African braai

If you’re a meat lover in Johannesburg, you’ll definitely be in your element here as meat is a massive part of South Africa’s food culture and menu. Biltong is one such classic South African delicacy, a form of dried, cured meat and should definitely be tasted, even just once.

There’s also no doubt you’ll be invited to a braai or two, or even host a couple yourself. Although it should be noted a braai is definitely not the same as a barbeque (any South African will tell you that)!

If you love sport then you’re definitely in the right place

Rugby, cricket and soccer (football) are considered the nation’s most popular sports to watch and play. The South African national rugby team, aka the ‘Springboks’ are the fifth-best national rugby team in the world and their home matches at Ellis Park stadium in the heart of Johannesburg are always worth attending.

When it comes to sport and recreation at the University of Witwatersrand, there’s something for everyone, from hockey to basketball, swimming to athletics and so much more.

A big deciding factor for Tristan Mohamed, a Civil Engineering student to study at Wits University was the sports facilities as he wanted to continue playing rugby. While he knew of Wits University’s high academic reputation, he also wanted to discover the sports opportunities available to him.

He told us: “I was given a tour of Wits and the sports facilities and was taken through their achievements and alumni. It made me realize how under acknowledged Wits sport is - it was amazing.

“I ended up registering right then and there, and even joined the rugby team.”

You’ll have the chance to get off the beaten track and explore South Africa

Beyond the boundaries of university campus, Johannesburg is the ideal destination for those who crave adventure. Although the city itself is several hours by road away from the nearest beach, there are plenty of other activities and trips for adventure and travel lovers to enjoy.

For example, Pilanesberg National Park is definitely worth the three-and-a-half-hour drive from Johannesburg. Make a weekend of it and experience one of the country’s most captivating game reserves. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the ‘Big Five’ on a safari – lion, leopard, buffalo, giraffe and rhino.

Just north of Johannesburg, you’ll find the location which is believed to be the origin of all mankind. In 1999, the world-renowned archaeological site, Cradle of Humankind was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is where over a third of all the world’s human ancestor fossils have been discovered.

Management is about more than ‘being a boss’. It’s about great leadership, perfecting the art of communication, being resilient, knowing how to make a good deal, understanding numbers, being an effective and creative problem-solver, as well as making all the right connections.

There’s a myriad of reasons to study a postgraduate degree in global management – but knowing whether it’s right for you is another question.

We spoke to Professor Chun Hui, program director of the new Master of Global Management at The University of Hong Kong to find out more.

You want to understand the inner workings of a multinational organization

If the idea of working in management on a global scale excites you, you may want to consider starting with studying a global management postgraduate degree.

Global management is a distinctive field of business leadership which concentrates on the quality of managing and cooperating of people, resources, facilities and strategies in order to go above and beyond expectations when it comes to the goals and objectives of the business on a global scale.

You’ll have a genuine interest in understanding what makes people behave and work in a particular way, and what makes a manager within a highly integrated setting able to lead and maintain a well-run team.

You want to better your industry knowledge and skillset

Global management comprises several vast areas of business, from strategy and operations to data analysis, marketing to finance. So, no matter how big or small an organization is, it will always require individuals with high-quality management skills.

There’s a lot to learn about when it comes to enhancing an understanding of global management, while also developing specific managerial skills, such as managing people, processes and policies, especially within a global setting.

“When we designed the curriculum, it wasn’t just about teaching basic textbook knowledge,” said Professor Hui.

“It was more about helping students acquire the knowledge – if you see a problem, what kind of knowledge can you leverage to overcome this, and then come up with better solutions.”

You can study it at a world-renowned university

The University of Hong Kong which ranked 25th in the world in the QS World University Rankings® 2020 and second in the QS Asia University Rankings 2019 has developed the Master of Global Management which teaches students to think exclusively in a wider global context, where they learn to address issues relating to working and managing across cultures.

Students also learn how to incorporate individual, organizational and national knowledge which is relevant in the effective management of global issues and function of business.

“We have a very exclusive structure, understanding individuals, organizations, and national cultural contexts,” explained Professor Hui.

“It’s not a typical MBA program in which students will have to take a specific course in finance, marketing, economics, accounting.

“It’s focused on management, meaning that students will learn something about human behaviors, learn something about themselves and how other people behave, they will learn about organizations and they will learn about nations and cultures.

“The content is orientated towards things that are related to this global context,” he added.

You can expand your global perspective with experential learning opportunities

A number of academic institutions around the world offer degree programs that focus specifically on global management studies, with several making global management study and work experiences an integral part of the curriculum.

The Master of Global Management offers students the opportunity to take part in a company field trip, said Professor Hui: “The field trip involves company visits for students so they can meet with practitioners who are really dealing with global management issues.”

It can help you break into the global management sector and prepare you for an international career

Whether you want to branch off and start your own business venture or work for a private business or NGO, working in management is varied, intricate and demanding. Simply having a relevant undergraduate and postgraduate qualification in hand is no longer enough to stand out from the competitive graduate job market.

With today’s marketplaces and businesses integrating on such large global scales, there’s high demand for talented global management professionals. As a result, employers actively seek candidates who have global experience and who can demonstrate their ability to learn and work well with others, be open-minded and display fantastic problem-solving abilities, according to Professor Hui.

Although there’s no quick and easy way to get to senior level management roles, there are many global management entry-level job roles which are a great gateway into the industry, as Professor Hui told us:

“There are companies who are looking to expand their business activities across national and regional boundaries and will hire people within business management and strategy.

“These are companies who want trainees and entry level employees who have some kind of global exposure. And when these people progress in their careers, we hope at a more senior level there are many opportunities for them, such as directors of global business developments,” he added.
