L'Università degli Studi della Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", first known as Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli, was founded in 1991 (Murst, March  25,  1991, and  DPR  April 27, 1992), to meet the growing educational demand that the Neapolitan Università degli Studi Federico II could no longer satisfy.

The University of Campania started its activity on November 1, 1992, with 19,000 students and 8 Departments.

Today, the Vanvitelli  has around 27,000 students and 18 Departments.

University  has constantly pursued a policy of territorial development, also by renovating disused historical buildings that the national governments made available, and which now host thousands of students, as illustrated in the book “Le dimore della conoscenza”. This book highlights the historical, heritage of the monumental buildings that house the Departments located in Napoli, Caserta, Aversa, Capua, Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Marcianise.

Department of Architecture and Industrial Design is located in Aversa, along the ancient and historical via Consolare Campana ad septimum. The building includes the homonymous church and its magnificent cloister.

Department of Economics is situated in Capua, and is now located in the former Convento delle Dame Monache (at Corso Gran Priorato di Malta), later denominated Caserma Ettore Fieramosca, which was fully renovated in 2005.

Department of Law is in the historical centre of SM Capua Vetere, at Palazzo Melzi, and was built in XVII century, as the Archibishop’s refectory. Since1808, it was the seat of the Court of Law, until the Department of Law was established there. There is also a modern building for the classrooms.

Department of Engineering, or ‘La Scuola Politecnica e delle Scienze di Base’, has three Departments situated in the historical building of the Annunziata in Aversa, built at the beginning of  XIV century. The Annunziata was an Angevin religious institution, which dealt with social assistance and control.

Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage is in the modern building ‘Aulario’ , in S.M. Capua Vetere.

Department of Medicine and Surgery offers two six-year courses, one in Caserta, the other in Napoli, at the ‘Polyclinic of Napoli’ (where the administrative offices are). For the students of the course in Caserta, the practical training activities take place at the Hospital of Caserta (and, partly, in other hospitals in Napoli), while for the students of the course in Napoli such activities take place at the two polyclinics in Napoli. The seats in Napoli are the buildings of Sant'Andrea delle Dame and the cloister of Santa Patrizia. The seats of the six-year course in Dentistry, as well as the Museum of Human Anatomy are also in Napoli. A new site for the Polyclinic of Caserta is under construction.

Department of Psychology is situated in Viale Ellittico, in the former Palazzo delle Poste, in Caserta.

Department of Environmental, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies is  in Caserta, at the ‘Polo Scientifico’.

Department of Mathematics and Physics is part of the ‘Scuola Politecnica e delle Scienze di Base’ and is in Caserta, at the ‘Polo Scientifico’.

Department of Political Sciences "Jean Monnet” is in Caserta.
