QS World University Rankings® 2018

Looking at the QS World University Rankings® 2018, USP went down one place from last year to now rank 121^st in the world, while UNICAMP climbed nine places to now rank joint 182^nd in the world. Both universities appear in the top 150 for their reputations among academics and employers, with USP surpassing UNICAMP on both.

However, both universities receive equal scores for the remaining indicators used to compile the rankings, earning 401+ each for their faculty/student ratio, research impact (citations per faculty) and the international diversity of both institutions’ students and faculty members.

Subject strengths

If you’re still unsure on which of these top universities in Brazil gets your vote, then the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 can help narrow down each institutions’ strengths in different academic disciplines. USP ranks above UNICAMP for all five of the broad subject areas in the ranking, gaining a clear lead in each. However, despite this, there are some subjects which USP and UNICAMP are evenly matched for, for example chemistry, computer science, chemical engineering, modern languages and nursing, all of which both universities are ranked 51-100 in the world for.

Location

Both Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and Universidade Estadual De Campinas (UNICAMP) are located in São Paulo state, the most populous and developed state in Brazil. USP is based in the city of São Paulo while UNICAMP is based 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) outside Campinas city center, which is 96km (60 miles) northwest of São Paulo. Campinas means grass fields in Portuguese, referring to the scenic local landscape, and the city offers an interesting historical heritage, economic prosperity, plus excellent shopping, food and nightlife. While Campinas is by no means small (home to around 2.9 million people in its metro area), it may be preferable for those who aren’t keen on the idea of studying in São Paulo – the largest city in the Southern Hemisphere with more than 21 million inhabitants. Campinas’ location also means it’s easily possible to visit São Paulo while you study. However, other students might feel right at home in São Paulo – despite the chaos and traffic, it offers no shortage of new things to explore, whether it’s enjoying the famous carnival season or trying something new from the huge range of cuisine – with its vibrant culture helping to earn it 69^th place in the latest edition of the QS Best Student Cities.

Tuition fees & funding

The Brazilian Federal Constitution has established the right for free education up to postgraduate degree level, meaning all publicly funded universities are free of charge. Both USP and UNICAMP are public and therefore do not charge tuition fees. USP states on its website that no fees are charged for undergraduate and ‘stricto sensu graduate courses’ – stricto sensu refers to postgraduate degrees which enable the student to go into an academic career upon graduating. USP also states that ‘other MBA or extension courses may have tuition fees’. In contrast, MBAs are considered lato sensu postgraduate programs, meaning they are specialized and do charge tuition fees: to give you an example, the tuition fees for an MBA in Agribusiness are 18 monthly installments of R$800 (~US$240). Due to the free tuition, USP does not offer scholarship programs. Meanwhile, at UNICAMP, there are likewise no tuition fees, meaning students will just need to cover their own living expenses. Universities in Brazil generally don’t provide accommodation for students, meaning you’ll need to find private accommodation, which your university’s international office can assist you with.

There are external organizations which offer scholarships for international students to study in Brazil. For example, the OAS-GCUB Scholarship Program awards scholarships to outstanding citizens of OAS member states to complete masters or PhD programs at universities in Brazil. Undergraduate, doctorate and post-doctorate students from the European Union are eligible to apply for scholarships from the IBRASIL Project, which is funded by European Commission, and Canadian students are eligible to apply for scholarships from the Colleges and Institutes Canada to study in Brazil. PhD Students from developing countries are eligible to apply for PhD fellowships from The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

Finally, it’s important to note that if you want to study in Brazil you’ll need an excellent knowledge of Portuguese, and will need to prove your proficiency with the Celpe-Bras test. You’ll also need to have your application documents officially translated into Portuguese.

The QS BRICS World University Rankings 2018, released today, sees Brazil claiming an impressive 61 of the 300 possible positions, including 16 in the top 100. The BRICS ranking has been released annually since 2013 and aims to showcase the top universities in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, five major developing economies which boast a large number of strong universities.

Read on to discover the 10 top universities in Brazil this year, including information on each university’s subject strengths in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, and how the institutions performed on a regional scale in the recently published QS Latin America University Rankings 2018.

1. Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp)

Overtaking Universidade de São Paulo to be the highest-ranked university in Brazil both in the QS BRICS World University Rankings 2018 and the QS Latin America University Rankings 2018, the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) is ranked 12^th in this year’s BRICS and second in Latin America.

Unicamp was founded in 1966 in São Paulo and is noted for its research, claiming around eight percent of Brazil´s articles in scientific journals. The university also features among the world’s best for 36 out of a possible 46 subjects in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject, with positions in the global top 50 for agriculture & forestry and dentistry.

2. Universidade de São Paulo (USP)

Down three places to rank joint 13^th this year with Russia’s Saint-Petersburg State University, the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) is also ranked third in Latin America in 2018. USP is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Latin America and is the largest public university in Brazil, with around 95,000 students enrolled in 11 campuses.

It’s currently ranked among the world’s best for 41 subjects in the latest subject rankings, with top 50 positions for agriculture & forestry, law, architecture, art & design, mineral & mining engineering, sports-related subjects and more.

3. Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro

Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is ranked joint 31^st in this year’s BRICS ranking and is seventh in Latin America. Established in 1792 as the Royal Academy of Artillery, Fortification and Design, UFRJ is the oldest of these top universities in Brazil and now teaches more than 67,000 students. It’s mainly located in Rio de Janeiro, but has a presence in 10 other cities, and also owns a number of museums, hospitals and research centers.

4. Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho"

Established in 1976, Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho", also known as UNESP, is ranked 34^th in this year’s BRICS and 10^th in Latin America. In the BRICS ranking, it achieves one of the highest scores for its number of staff with a PhD, ranking 11^th out of the 300 institutions featured.

UNESP is made up of 24 campuses in São Paulo state, and is currently ranked among the world’s best for 17 subjects, including the top 100 for agriculture & forestry, dentistry, veterinary science and sports-related subjects.

5. Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)

Next in our look at the top universities in Brazil in 2018 is Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP), which is up 10 places to rank 42^nd this year. It also received a similar rank (41^st) in the Latin America rankings in 2018. Founded in 1946, PUC-SP has nine colleges, 45 departments, 39 undergraduate courses and 28 postgraduate programs. As of the latest subject rankings, it’s currently in the global top 300 for both linguistics and modern languages.

6. Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) retains its position of 46^th in the BRICS ranking this year, and was also ranked 13^th in the QS Latin America University Rankings. Established in 1940, PUC-Rio is a private, non-profit Catholic university located in the Gávea district of Rio de Janeiro, in a pleasant area at the edge of the Tijuca National Forest, a stone’s throw from the beach. PUC-Rio is ranked internationally for 11 subjects, including the top 150 for philosophy.

7. Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Ranked joint 47^th in the BRICS, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) is up six places this year and is also placed joint 11^th in Latin America. The largest public university in the country, UFMG educates around 49,000 students, and is free of charge. It was founded in 1927 and today offers 77 undergraduate courses and 80 postgraduate programs, with more than 900 research centers. UFMG appears in the latest subject rankings for 20 subjects, including the global top 50 for sports-related subjects.

8. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

The last of these top universities in Brazil to feature in the top 50 BRICS universities, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) is ranked 50^th in the BRICS ranking and 14^th in Latin America this year. As a public university, UFRGS does not charge tuition fees to its 33,200 students, although all students do need to sit a difficult exam, known as the vestibular exam, to gain admission. UFRGS is currently ranked for 23 subjects, including the top 100 for sports-related subjects.

9. Universidade de Brasilia (UnB)

The Universidade de Brasilia (UnB), the only university in this list located in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, is ranked 56^th in BRICS this year and 18^th in the Latin America ranking. UnB is a public institution with around 40,000 students in 26 faculties, and it also runs 18 specialized research centers across its four campuses. The university is currently ranked among the world’s best for 12 subjects, including the top 150 for agriculture & forestry and anthropology.

10. Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar)

Concluding our look at the top universities in Brazil in 2018 is the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), ranked 57^th in BRICS and 29^th in Latin America. Founded in 1968 as the first public university in São Paulo state, UFSCar has three campuses, with its main campus in the city of São Carlos, and currently has 24,825 students enrolled. Like other Brazilian universities, UFSCar achieved a top-100 position for sports-related subjects, and ranks among the world’s best for a further seven subjects.

Home to some of the most prestigious universities in Latin America, Brazil claims 54 out of the 250 total positions in the QS University Rankings: BRICS 2016. Published annually since 2013, the ranking aims to highlight the best universities in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, five major developing economies which each offer a number of highly regarded universities.

1. Universidade de São Paulo (USP)

The Universidade de São Paulo (USP) features at 10^th in the BRICS ranking this year and has also been ranked 1^st in the QS University Rankings: Latin America twice in a row. Established in 1934, USP is often referred to as the most prestigious university in the country, and has educated 12 Brazilian presidents. It’s the largest of the public universities in Brazil with over 90,000 students enrolled, spread across 11 campuses. Four of these are in São Paulo – the largest city in both Brazil and the Southern Hemisphere.

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, USP performs exceptionally well, ranked among the top universities in the world for 40 out of a possible 42 subjects. Of these, it’s in the global top 50 for seven subjects, including agriculture, veterinary science and architecture.

2. Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp)

Also located in São Paulo, the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) retains its position of 12^th in the BRICS ranking this year, and also features at 2^nd place in the Latin America ranking. It was established in 1966, and is consistently ranked as one the world’s best young institutions. Unicamp is responsible for around 15% of Brazil’s research, with its three campuses containing a total of 22 teaching and research centers. It has a large student body of around 35,600 students, of which almost 16,000 are studying postgraduate degrees.

Unicamp currently features among the world’s top universities for 29 subjects, with positions in the top 50 for dentistry and agriculture and forestry, as well as many more top 100 places.

3. Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)

Ranked 29^th in the BRICS countries this year, the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is currently placed 5^th in Latin America and is the oldest of all universities in Brazil. It was established in 1792, when the precursor to its technical school, the Royal Academy of Artillery, Fortification and Design, was founded. Now home to around 67,000 students, the university owns a range of museums, hospitals and research centers around the city of Rio de Janeiro, the second-largest in the country and 2016 Olympic Games host city.

Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is included as one of the best universities in the world for 30 subjects, with eight of these in the top 100, including performing arts, sociology and mineral and mining engineering.

4. Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho"

Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” is ranked 36^th in BRICS and 12^th in Latin America this year. It’s one of the six public universities in Brazil to be located in São Paulo, and is also sometimes known as São Paulo State University or simply UNESP. Another of the younger universities in Brazil, it was founded in 1976, and now has around 50,600 students enrolled in 23 campuses in São Paulo state. It’s considered one of Brazil’s leading research universities, and has 33 libraries, two university hospitals, three veterinary hospitals and several other clinics and complementary units.

Internationally ranked for 13 subjects this year, UNESP achieves positions among the top 50 institutions in the world for dentistry and veterinary science, as well as the top 100 for agriculture and forestry.

5. Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)

Staying in São Paulo state for the next of these top universities in Brazil, and the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) is ranked 45^th in BRICS and 27^th among Latin American countries. Founded in 1933 as a private medical school, UNESP’s teaching hospital was the first to be founded in Brazil. It was exclusively focused on the health sciences before becoming multidisciplinary, following government reforms in 2005.

The university’s background in health sciences is reflected in the subject rankings, in which UNESP ranks among the world’s best for four subjects. This includes a place in the global top 50 for nursing, top 150 for pharmacy and pharmacology, top 200 for medicine and top 250 for biological sciences.

6=. Pontificia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro – (PUC-Rio)

The Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (or PUC-Rio) is up one place in the BRICS ranking this year to now share 46^th place with the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Also ranked 15^th in Latin America, PUC-Rio was founded in 1940 by the Society of Jesus and was the first of the private universities in Brazil to be established. It is a non-profit, philanthropic and Catholic institution with humanistic principles, and is located in the Gávea neighborhood, south of Rio de Janeiro, in an attractive position on the edge of the Tijuca national forest.

PUC-Rio is this year included in nine subject rankings, including the global top 200 for politics and philosophy.

6=. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS)

Featured at joint 46^th in the BRICS ranking this year along with PUC-Rio, the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) also places 16^th in Latin America. UFRGS has one of the highest numbers of scientific publications amongst these top universities in Brazil. It’s mostly located in the vibrant city of Porto Alegre (the capital of the Rio Grande do Sul state, in the south of the country), but has some off-campus buildings for its business school and art institute.

UFRGS is internationally ranked in an impressive 18 subjects this year, achieving positions in the top 100 for performing arts, philosophy, and mineral and mining engineering.

8. Universidade de Brasilia

The Universidade de Brasília is up two places from last year to place 51^st in the BRICS ranking. It also comes 9^th in the Latin America ranking, and is the only one of these 10 top universities in Brazil to be located in the country’s capital, Brasilia. Founded in 1962, the university currently enrolls around 40,000 students in 26 faculties and has 18 centers dedicated to specialized research. Other facilities include a hospital, sports center, seismological observatory, physical experiment facilities, an ecological station, a farm and more.

Ranked among the world’s best for eight subjects this year, the Universidade de Brasília achieves its best positions for anthropology (top 100) and agriculture and forestry (top 150).

9. Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)

Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, also known as PUC-SP for short, is a private, non-profit Catholic university located in the Perdizes neighborhood of São Paulo. Ranked 52^nd in BRICS and 38^th in Latin America this year, PUC-SP was founded in 1946 and currently educates around 23,000 students. It was the first university in Brazil to offer graduate programs in the fields of multimedia, social service, psychology of learning, applied linguistics and speech-language therapy, and is highly regarded for its research in the social sciences.

PUC-SP is currently only internationally ranked for one subject, claiming a place in the world’s top 200 for modern languages.

10. Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

The final of our list of the 10 top universities in Brazil is the public Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, placing 53^rd in the BRICS ranking and 14^th in Latin America. One of the largest Brazilian universities, UFMG was established in 1927 and today has a student body of around 49,000. It’s located in the city of Belo Horizonte (the state capital of Minas Gerais) across a 2,000 acre campus in the Pampulha neighborhood.

Currently ranked among the world’s best for 18 subjects, UFMG achieves its highest positions (all in the top 150) for philosophy, agriculture and forestry, pharmacy and pharmacology, and statistics.

QS Best Student Cities ranking: =76^th

With six institutions in the QS World University Rankings® 2020, São Paulo certainly has strong credentials as a study abroad destination. Leading the pack is Universidade de São Paulo, ranked joint 116^th in the world.

The largest city in the southern hemisphere, São Paulo is vibrant, and somewhat chaotic. If you like your cities full-on, São Paulo could be right up your alley.

Carnivals take place through the year, the city’s nightlife is known for its intensity and its food is famed for both diversity and quality. In short, there’s no shortage of the Brazilian joie de vivre in this sprawling metropolis.

Brazil is home to many of the most competitive universities in Latin America, and also within the developing world – as shown by the country’s strong presence in the recently released QS University Rankings: BRICS 2015.

Covering the top universities in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the QS University Rankings: BRICS was developed to highlight and track the performance of universities in these five major developing economies. Read on for an overview of the top 10 universities in Brazil based on the latest QS rankings releases.

1. Universidade de São Paulo (USP)

Well established as one of the most prestigious public universities in Brazil, the Universidade de São Paulo (USP) is this year ranked 1^st in the Latin American rankings, 9^th in the BRICS ranking and 132^nd in the QS World University Rankings® 2014/15. With a large community of around 90,000 students, the Universidade de São Paulo is located in São Paulo, Brazil’s most populous city, across a number of campuses. It lays claim to being the alma mater of 12 Brazilian presidents.

This year, the Universidade de São Paulo is ranked internationally in an impressive 35 out of 36 subjects covered by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015. Of these subjects, USP ranks among the world’s top 50 universities for agriculture & forestry, architecture, art & design, civil & structural engineering, dentistry, pharmacy & pharmacology, philosophy and veterinary science.

2. Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp)

This year the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) comes 2^nd in Latin America, 12^th in the BRICS countries and 206^th in the world. Again located in São Paulo, Unicamp was established as recently as 1966, making it one of the world’s top young universities – ranked 15^th in the latest QS Top 50 Under 50. Approximately 37,000 students are currently enrolled at Unicamp, half of which are postgraduates.

Unicamp is ranked among the top 50 universities worldwide for agriculture & forestry, dentistry and electrical & electronic engineering, and is also featured in the global top 200 in a further 20 subjects.

3. Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ)

The Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is this year ranked 5^th in the Latin American rankings, 25^th in the BRICS ranking and 271^st in the world rankings. Situated in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s second largest metropolis, the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro has an enrollment of over 56,000 students and owns 43 libraries, several museums, nine hospitals, many laboratories and a number of leading research facilities.

Ranked in a total of 24 subjects in this year’s subject rankings, the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro ranks highest for development studies (41^st in the world) and is also among the world’s top 100 schools for architecture, history & archaeology, pharmacy & pharmacology, and sociology.

4. Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP)

Also known as São Paulo State University or UNESP, the Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” is ranked 8^th in Latin America this year, 27^th in the BRICS rankings and 421-430 in the world rankings. One of six public universities in Brazil located in São Paulo, UNESP has a current enrollment of over 50,000 students across 23 campuses, offering 30 libraries, one university hospital, three veterinary hospitals and several clinics for dentistry, psychology, physical therapy, and speech and hearing therapy.

The Universidade Estadual Paulista “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” is internationally ranked in 11 subjects this year, faring best for dentistry and veterinary science (among the top 50 schools worldwide), followed by agriculture & forestry (top 100).

5. Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)

Another of the many leading Brazilian universities located in São Paulo state, the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) is currently placed 30^th in Latin America, 37^th in the BRICS countries and 421-430 in the world. Although UNIFESP was originally focused on health sciences, the school is now multidisciplinary thanks to government reforms of Brazilian universities. UNIFESP’s 18,000 students are located across six campuses throughout São Paulo state.

Of of the three subjects UNIFESP is globally ranked for, it performs best for pharmacy & pharmacology (in the top 100 schools worldwide).

6. Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)

Among the five largest universities in Brazil, the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais is ranked 11^th in Latin America, 41^st in the BRICS ranking and 451-460 in the world. A multidisciplinary public university offering a wide range of programs at all levels, the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais is located to the north of the city of Belo Horizonte in the Pampulha neighborhood across a campus of 2,000 acres. The school currently has an enrollment of over 45,000 students.

The Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais is globally ranked for 18 subjects, performing best (top 100) for pharmacy & pharmacology.

7. Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Do Sul (UFRGS)

A leading producer of scientific publications and home to a student body of over 30,000, the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Do Sul (UFRGS) is ranked 12^th in Latin America, 42^nd in the BRICS ranking and 471-480 in the world rankings. While predominantly situated in the vibrant city of Porto Alegre, some departments of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Do Sul are found further afield, including the business school and art institute.

Globally ranked in an impressive 17 subjects this year, the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande Do Sul performs best (in the top 100 schools worldwide) for pharmacy & pharmacology and philosophy.

8=. Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP)

A private non-profit Catholic university, the Pontificia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, or PUC-SP for short, is ranked 31^st in the Latin American ranking,joint 47^th in the BRICS ranking and 551-600 in the world rankings this year. Specializing in the social sciences, offering law, economics, education and communication programs among others, PUC-SP is well-recognized for its research in the areas of society, politics and human psychology. Located to the west of São Paulo city in the neighborhood of Perdizes, PUC-SP has a current enrollment of more than 20,000.

Although only ranked globally in two subjects this year, PUC-SP is one of just three top universities in Brazil ranked for art & design (in the top 100 worldwide), as well as being ranked for modern languages.

8=. Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio)

The Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (or PUC-Rio) is at a level pegging with PUC-SP in the BRICS ranking, sharing 47^th position. It’s also ranked 14^th in Latin America and 501-550 in the world rankings. Located south of Rio de Janeiro city in Gávea, PUC-Rio sits beside Tijuca national forest and boasts riverside and tree-covered mountain views. It caters to more than 18,000 students, including 8,000 postgraduates.

This year PUC-Rio is internationally ranked in 10 subjects, including a place in the top 200 for computer science, economics & econometrics, linguistics, philosophy and politics.

10. Universidade de Brasília

Of the top 10 universities in Brazil, the Universidade de Brasília is the only one located in the nation’s capital city, Brasília. Ranked 10^th in Latin America, 53= in the BRICS ranking and 551-600 in the world rankings, the Universidade de Brasília has improved its international standing significantly over the past few years. Established in 1962 and hosting nearly 40,000 students, 10,000 of which are postgraduates, the Universidade de Brasília offers a wide range of programs including a number of flexible distance learning, evening and specialist programs.

Ranked by QS in seven subjects this year, the Universidade de Brasília currently features among the world’s top 200 schools for agriculture & forestry, politics and sociology.
