Do one-year specialized business degrees have the ability to disrupt the business education status quo? A report published by the General Management Admissions Council (GMAC) in April 2019 found that, for only the second time in the last decade, 47 percent of candidates prefer the idea of pursuing a one-year MBA compared to 45 percent who would prefer to study a two-year MBA program.

One-year study formats with integrated international study and work experiences are becoming increasingly popular, so we spoke with Katherine Campbell and Samy Ahmed, both graduates of the M.S. in Global Commerce at the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce about their experiences and how the M.S. in Global Commerce is making waves in the world of business education.

You can earn two degrees and one certificate within a year

There’s often a lot of talk about how the graduate job market is getting more competitive each year. As a result, many prospective students want their degree to offer unique learning opportunities, from internships with global organizations, to innovative technologies that offer the most up-to-date learning experiences.

While some institutions offer the opportunity to study a dual degree or double degree, there aren’t many that offer the possibility of graduating with three qualifications – all within the space of one year.

Bringing a fresh twist to the business school education landscape, the McIntire School of Commerce allows recent graduates with relevant undergraduate business degrees to earn an M.S. in Global Commerce from the University of Virginia in the United States, as well as an M.S. in Global Strategic Management from ESADE Business School in Spain and a certificate in International Business from Lingnan (University) College in China. Phew!

“It’s hard to name another program that can offer students such an invaluable experience,” says Samy.

“From leadership development classes to marketing analytics lectures, the M.S. in Global Commerce represents a solid choice for students and young professionals interested in expanding their knowledge on different but complementary aspects of doing business in a global scenario.”

You’ll be able to launch yourself into a global career trajectory

Before you’re even accepted onto a particular graduate business degree program, you’ll be expected to have at least two years’ worth of professional experience under your belt.

Although it’s not impossible to get the experience before embarking on further education it can be a relief to learn that some graduate business degrees, such as the McIntire’s School of Commerce M.S. in Global Commerce, require little or no work experience at all.

After graduating from the M.S. in Global Commerce in June this year, Samy joined Lenovo as a Senior Global HR Strategist as part of the company’s Global Future Leader Program – a five year-long accelerated leadership development program.

“I joined this tech giant three months ago and embarked on an eight-week business trip across the globe to recruit top talent to support our organization.

“I have a very hectic schedule that really excites me. Today I’m in San Francisco, tomorrow I could be in Chicago, Beijing or New York City!

“I have to credit McIntire for the two main skills I use on a daily basis at work: being very flexible and open-minded.”

Samy says that at Lenovo, new technologies are rolled out every month. “Being able to quickly adapt to new changes represents a big competitive advantage you need to succeed in such a fast environment.

After graduating from the M.S. in Global Commerce in June 2018, Katherine began her career in consulting, moving from from Charlotte in North Carolina to New York City, where she now works as a financial services consultant for Ernst & Young.

When asked how the M.S. in Global Commerce has contributed to her career, she told us: “The program is all about adaptability, which is something that has been significantly applicable during my time in consulting.

“On the more technical side, I've used many of the concepts taught in the Excel course on a daily basis on my current project,” she adds.

多数人一生都只会上一次商学院而已，所以必须消息足够灵通才能选择正确的那所学校。但是，在选择一所可能会决定自己未来几年职业和个人发展的商学院时，你应该注意哪些关键因素？

费用和位置因素

对于许多人来说，学费是选择学校最开始考虑，同时也是最后考虑的因素。是否去往异乡学习的决定在择校过程中也起着很大的作用。

众所周知，世界上许多大城市的生活成本都比较高，但也有一些地方的学习机会和生活质量同样很好，而且还不需要花费太多。

如果你有兴趣去法国留学，你会欣喜地发现，在法国南部的蒙彼利埃，生活成本要比首都巴黎低30-40%。蒙彼利埃市在L’Etudiant 杂志2019年学生城市排名中也位列前五名。

许多商学院（但并非全部）会要求看你的GMAT/GRE考试成绩，证明具有一定水平的英语语言能力，并且要求学生面试——面对面或视频面试。

We spoke to Professor Chun Hui, program director of the new Master of Global Management at The University of Hong Kong to find out more.

You want to understand the inner workings of a multinational organization

If the idea of working in management on a global scale excites you, you may want to consider starting with studying a global management postgraduate degree.

Global management is a distinctive field of business leadership which concentrates on the quality of managing and cooperating of people, resources, facilities and strategies in order to go above and beyond expectations when it comes to the goals and objectives of the business on a global scale.

You’ll have a genuine interest in understanding what makes people behave and work in a particular way, and what makes a manager within a highly integrated setting able to lead and maintain a well-run team.

You want to better your industry knowledge and skillset

Global management comprises several vast areas of business, from strategy and operations to data analysis, marketing to finance. So, no matter how big or small an organization is, it will always require individuals with high-quality management skills.

There’s a lot to learn about when it comes to enhancing an understanding of global management, while also developing specific managerial skills, such as managing people, processes and policies, especially within a global setting.

“When we designed the curriculum, it wasn’t just about teaching basic textbook knowledge,” said Professor Hui.

“It was more about helping students acquire the knowledge – if you see a problem, what kind of knowledge can you leverage to overcome this, and then come up with better solutions.”

You can study it at a world-renowned university

The University of Hong Kong which ranked 25th in the world in the QS World University Rankings® 2020 and second in the QS Asia University Rankings 2019 has developed the Master of Global Management which teaches students to think exclusively in a wider global context, where they learn to address issues relating to working and managing across cultures.

Students also learn how to incorporate individual, organizational and national knowledge which is relevant in the effective management of global issues and function of business.

“We have a very exclusive structure, understanding individuals, organizations, and national cultural contexts,” explained Professor Hui.

“It’s not a typical MBA program in which students will have to take a specific course in finance, marketing, economics, accounting.

“It’s focused on management, meaning that students will learn something about human behaviors, learn something about themselves and how other people behave, they will learn about organizations and they will learn about nations and cultures.

“The content is orientated towards things that are related to this global context,” he added.

You can expand your global perspective with experential learning opportunities

A number of academic institutions around the world offer degree programs that focus specifically on global management studies, with several making global management study and work experiences an integral part of the curriculum.

The Master of Global Management offers students the opportunity to take part in a company field trip, said Professor Hui: “The field trip involves company visits for students so they can meet with practitioners who are really dealing with global management issues.”

It can help you break into the global management sector and prepare you for an international career

Whether you want to branch off and start your own business venture or work for a private business or NGO, working in management is varied, intricate and demanding. Simply having a relevant undergraduate and postgraduate qualification in hand is no longer enough to stand out from the competitive graduate job market.

With today’s marketplaces and businesses integrating on such large global scales, there’s high demand for talented global management professionals. As a result, employers actively seek candidates who have global experience and who can demonstrate their ability to learn and work well with others, be open-minded and display fantastic problem-solving abilities, according to Professor Hui.

Although there’s no quick and easy way to get to senior level management roles, there are many global management entry-level job roles which are a great gateway into the industry, as Professor Hui told us:

“There are companies who are looking to expand their business activities across national and regional boundaries and will hire people within business management and strategy.

“These are companies who want trainees and entry level employees who have some kind of global exposure. And when these people progress in their careers, we hope at a more senior level there are many opportunities for them, such as directors of global business developments,” he added.

What is an advanced master’s?

To get a better idea of what an advanced master’s is all about, we spoke with Dr Anne-Flore Maman Larraufie, Academic Director of the Advanced Master Strategy & Management of International Business (MS SMIB) at ESSEC Business School, which has several campuses around the world, including France and Singapore.

A lesser known degree, but nonetheless just as reputable, valuable and challenging, the advanced master’s is an official and accredited postgraduate diploma from a higher education institution. It is generally tailored towards specific disciplines and is offered in only a few countries around the world – most commonly in France.

You don’t need any previous professional experience

“It’s called an advanced master’s because it’s in between a master’s and an MBA. As a result we don’t require any minimum year of professional experience either so you can apply straight after you’ve completed your first master’s degree,” said Dr Maman Larraufie.

All academic backgrounds are welcome

Even if you’re not a math whizz or your previous master’s or undergraduate degree wasn’t math or business related, it shouldn’t hold you back, according to Dr Maman Larraufie.

“We have some people who have studied the arts. I’m responsible for recruiting students and I think diversity also means diversity of academic background and not just nationalities,” she said.

Of course, there are still some rigorous requirements necessary for studying an advanced master’s, such as the General Management Admissions Test (GMAT): “Because we have a lot of finance courses in this program you do need to be ready to work with a lot of math and numbers.”

Go international and study all over the world

The opportunity to travel overseas for your studies is exciting and is a great way to tap into various cultures and their way of doing business. You’ll meet a diverse network of people too – from your class cohort to professors who all bring their own wealth of experience and knowledge.

It’s not about learning outdated business models, strategies and theories

Whether you study corporate strategy, strategic consulting, digital transformation or financial management, it’s important that institutions consider the demands of the current job market and develop a curriculum that aligns with such demands.

“We’ve shifted towards tracks which are going to be more focused on one specific area. For example we have a track dedicated to strategy consulting for international business departments which is for students who aim to become consultants in big consulting companies.”

Other modules that have recently been introduced on the MS SMIB curriculum include big data as well as the Internet of Thing (IoT) and the impact it has on business conduct.

There’s a strong emphasis on hands-on learning

As a former Advanced Master Strategy & Management of International Business student herself, Dr Maman Larraufie knows the importance of hands-on learning and what it means for not just your academic experience but professional experience too.

At the ESSEC Asia-Pacific Campus in Singapore, students jump straight into work with a seven-month consulting mission with a genuine company based in Asia. Opportunities to work with a real company, be it a start-up or a multinational corporation, are a sure-fire way of enhancing your professional skills as well as your industry acumen.

“It’s very demanding as companies are expecting a real result. It’s not just a project it’s a real job which students have to do for the company.”

You don’t need to follow a set career path after graduating

An advanced master can lead to a number of fruitful and lucrative career paths.

“Around 30 percent of our students will work in consulting and will go and work for traditional consulting companies, especially abroad. A lot of students have gone to work for the top consulting firms in Spain, Morocco, or China,” said Dr Maman Larraufie.

Many students embark on a career in marketing, with several going into the luxury marketing industry. Finance is also a popular route to take after graduating, especially in asset management and private equity, according to Dr Maman Larraufie.

Advanced master’s students who have an engineering or pharmaceutical background also benefit greatly.

“Roughly 50 percent of our students will have an engineering background and so we have a lot of them going into aeronautics and space, or defense companies and energy companies, such as EDF and GE.

“We also have approximately 15 percent of students coming from a pharmaceutical background who go on to work in business analytics or marketing within the pharmaceutical industry.”

Discussions and debates surrounding sustainability are a big topic in the world right now – especially with younger generations.

Last month, Swedish teenager and climate change activist Greta Thunberg delivered a speech at the UN Climate Change Summit, condemning world leaders for their failed attempts at taking action against the climate crisis.

At an education level it’s important to consider how higher education institutions implement a curriculum that teaches aspiring businesspeople about the importance of sustainability within business. For instance, the circular economy is gaining momentum and attention within every industry and sector.

By eliminating the traditional linear economy, the circular economy ultimately works to limit waste and maximize resources by implementing a closed-loop production process that’s both restorative and regenerative. But why is this important for business and business education?

We spoke with Professor Joseph Sarkis at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to find out more.

Learning about the circular economy isn’t just for engineering and environmental students

“There are many possible ideas for developing new industries and business models in this environment,” said Sarkis.

With huge opportunities for business students to increase their awareness of sustainability within a business setting and become forward thinkers in what is a very critical time for the environment, it’s becoming more important than ever that business schools continue to adapt and refresh their curricula.

In fact, the circular economy is a focal point of Professor Sarkis’ research as well as the MS in Supply Chain Management and MS in Operation Analytics Management at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In his research, Professor Sarkis stressed the importance of studying the circular economy:

“Circular economy practices have been very important for industry. Some of these practices are required by regulatory policy; some by community and customer pressures.

“It can also be important as one of the only ways for some industries to do business in the future as resource scarcity becomes a serious problem. There are also competitive pressures – where others can benefit greatly and become more competitive if businesses fail to keep up with some of these latest practices.”

MS in Supply Chain Management and MS in Operation Analytics Management students are able to learn about the various circular economy practices from a variety of perspectives, including general management, marketing, and operations. This is in addition to developing an in-depth understanding of more traditional business elements such as finance, marketing, managing, and operations.

“It’s imperative that we do this because it is a very important topic not only theoretically, but practically,” said Sarkis.

“There are many new cases where brand-name companies have made the circular economy part of their operations and strategies,” he explained.

Businesses have the power to protect resources and support the environment

“The interesting thing about all this work, and a mantra throughout my career, is that companies, entrepreneurs, and communities can do well financially by doing good by saving resources and limiting environmental pollution and waste,” said Sarkis.

One simple yet effective example of the circular economy, which can be easily implemented into practically any business is ‘servicitization’.

Sarkis explains: “What if, instead of buying goods, consuming them, and then disposing of them, all goods were leased? That we only lease a service. Instead of buying a computer, we lease it instead, and at the end of its life it’s taken back (circular) by the company it’s leased it from.”

With renting replacing purchasing products and services, businesses are encouraging closed-loop recycling where they’re able to increasingly lengthen and widen the use of such products and services. New business models like this can be particularly lucrative as the cost of materials decline overtime.

“What if we do this for our clothes? The system has to be set up where we not only buy, but return – circularity – back to the manufacturer or retailer. The material source for future products can be managed easily. The model would not be about trying to sell products that can be used quickly, but products which can be taken back and updated,” explained Sarkis.

Reaping the benefits on both a financial and social scale

Many argue that there is no simple or quick-fix solution to sustainability issues, yet the circular economy is a model that’s used frequently within manufacturing and construction, as well as business.

Despite a report by McKinsey & Company in 2015 outlining the circular economy could generate a net economic benefit of $1.8 trillion by 2030, the uptake for implementing circular economy business models remains slow.

However, momentum is gathering, particularly in the mindset of consumers determined to make more ethical and sustainable choices. As a result, businesses need to act fast if they are to stay relevant and up-to-date in a world that’s increasingly aware of sustainability issues on both a local and global scale.

GRE虽然对于任何备考者来说都是一项具有挑战性的考试，但人们很容易忽略在母语非英语的人群中更为普遍。众所周知，这项考试对语言、词汇和阅读理解部分比GMAT考试（因数学难题而闻名）更难。

让自己沉浸在英文语境中

如果英语不是你的母语，唯一让能适应的方法就是完全沉浸其中。其实也不必那么辛苦无聊。虽然阅读《纽约时报》和《华尔街日报》的日常文章会有很大的好处，可以接触到新词汇和密集的阅读材料，但也有其他方法可以提高你的语言能力，可能更有创造性的方法。

例如大量可供下载的英语播客，可以大幅度提高听力、口语和理解能力。此外，看英语电视节目，尤其是配有字幕的节目，也很有用——也是学习俚语的好方法！

不管用什么方法让自己沉浸在英语之中，显然最快速适应的方式就是多接触。

每天背15至25个单词

似乎看着很多，但为了GRE考试，明智的做法是总体增加2000个英语词汇量。冰冻三尺非一日之寒，想让大脑记住所有这些新的词汇花一个月也还是太短。建立新的词汇量需要时间、耐心以及练习、练习、反复练习。

从逻辑上讲，有很多方法可以做到这一点。当然，有许多新的手机软件可以通过练习来增加你的词汇量，但传统的单词卡也是一个很好的办法。用考研英语词汇来丰富词汇量，有助于你在GRE考试中读懂密集的阅读文章。这样备考的好处将会超出你GRE的水平范畴，毕竟在大学圈子里（以及鸡尾酒会上！）多掌握点英语肯定有用。

用英语思考

母语不是英语的同学经常会用母语的方式观察、吸收、理解一个短语，然后再翻译成英语。挑战一下自己，用英语思考的方法来备考GRE——包括新词、具有挑战性的词汇、惯用搭配和总结。当你处理身边的各种事情时，试着让英语成为你的默认语言，因为这种策略会促进对英语的使用和理解。

当你晚上能用英语而非母语做梦时，你就真的是学到一定境界了。对许多人来说，这标志着英语浸入式学习有了巨大飞跃，你应该能在GRE语文题获得好成绩。

用英语发短信/邮件

你要在GRE中采用“主动阅读”的方式，而不是被动阅读；毕竟，考试中阅读的并不是斯蒂芬·金的休闲读物。就像你在解一道数学方程题要做标记一样，你在阅读密集的文章段落时也要做笔记。这种做法被称为“标阅文章”，一般会标记作者要表达的所有主要观点、重要细节和论点/看法。这有助于你更顺畅地阅读学术文章，更快速地回答阅读理解的问题。

熟悉词根

英语基本上源于拉丁语和希腊语，所以熟悉单词的词根有助于你在遇到不确定的单词时进行猜词。重点记忆前缀和后缀，对于较长、较复杂和不熟的单词来说，这个方法很方便。

我需要说或学习第二语言
