The results, determined from research citation data along with the opinions of academics and graduate employers worldwide, aim to provide insights into the world’s top universities for engineering and technology this year.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, US
Type: Private research, land grant
Fact: Science, engineering and technology-focused, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is affiliated with 81 Nobel laureates, 52 recipients of the National Medal of Science, 45 Rhodes Scholars, 38 MacArthur Fellows and two Fields Medalists. In addition to being first among the top universities for engineering and technology, it’s also number one in the overall QS World University Rankings for the third consecutive year.
2. Stanford University
Last year’s rank: 2nd
Location: Stanford, California, US
Type: Private research
Fact:Stanford University faculty and alumni have founded globally renowned companies including Google, HP and Nike.
3. ETH Zurich
Last year’s rank: 5th
Location: Zürich, Switzerland
Type: Public
Fact: Albert Einstein studied at ETH Zurich before becoming a professor of theoretical physics at the school between 1912 and 1914. ETH Zurich is located in a German-speaking region of Switzerland.
4. University of Cambridge
Last year’s rank: 3rd
Location: Cambridge, UK
Type: Public research
Fact: The University of Cambridge makes up one half of the prestigious ‘Oxbridge’ pair, and is the second-oldest university in the English-speaking world.
5. University of California, Berkeley (UCB)
Last year’s rank: 4th
Location: Berkeley, California, US
Type: Public research
Fact: The University of California, Berkeley (UCB) is the flagship institution in the University of California system and offers the fourth-largest academic library in the whole of the US.
6. Imperial College London
Last year’s rank: 6th
Location: London, UK
Type: Public research
Fact: Imperial College London specializes in science, engineering, medicine and business with campuses across central London. In this year’s overall QS World University Rankings, it climbed to second place, sharing this spot with Cambridge University.
7. National University of Singapore (NUS)
Last year’s rank: 7th
Location: Southwest Singapore
Type: Public research
Fact: Founded in 1905, the National University of Singapore (NUS) is the oldest university in Singapore and largest in terms of enrollment and curriculum. It’s currently ranked the leading university in Asia, in the 2014 edition of the QS University Rankings: Asia.
8. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)
Last year’s rank: 10th
Location: Pasadena, California, US
Type: Private research
Fact: The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is situated just 11 miles outside of downtown Los Angeles on a 124-acre main campus. The school has a relatively small undergraduate enrollment of just under 1,000 students, with most of its community studying at postgraduate level.
9. Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

Location: Jurong West, Singapore
Type: Public research
Fact: Established in 1981, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is one of the youngest and fastest-rising institutions in the world’s top 50.
10=. Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL)
Last year’s rank: 8th
Location: Lausanne, Switzerland
Type: Public
Fact: The second of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology (alongside ETH Zurich), the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) boasts the current construction of a new Swiss Tech Convention Center. EPFL is located within a French-speaking region of Switzerland.
10=. Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech)

Location: Atlanta, Georgia, US
Type: Public research, space grant
Fact: Another technology-focused university, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) offers six colleges and specializes in all areas of engineering and IT.
