Hosei University, in keeping with its long held founding principles of Freedom and Progress, in the adherence to its mission of educating self-reliant individuals started establishment of new programs through reorganization and/or transformation of existent faculties and creation of new ones earlier than other rival universities. In keeping with the key words of Environment, Career Development, Internationalization, Information, Regional Tie-ups, Well-being, Comprehensive Design, there are now 15 faculties with 36 departments at the undergraduate level, 14 faculties with 30 specialties and 1 institute at the graduate level, and 3 professional graduate schools. In addition, 3 faculties in the correspondence school and the extension college are charged with providing lifelong learning. In April 2011 the long awaited goal of being able to educate Engineering Generalists was achieved by adding a Humanities program to the Engineering Program in the Faculty of Science and Engineering, thus establishing an innovative science department. Research organizations presently include 10 research centers, 3 Shiritsudaigaku Senryakuteki Kenkyuuban Keisei Shien Jigyou research centers (i.e., MEXT conditional support for research centers at private universities) and 6 institutional research centers. These changes are in response not only to the founding principles of Freedom and Progress but also to the slogans representative of the changing needs of the present era--Environment, Internationalization and Career Development--and are a result of the democratic discussions held in meetings on all three campuses, under the leadership of the University President and the Board of Trustees.
