The Savitribai Phule Pune University is one of the largest Universities in the world with more than six lakh students studying in 52 Post-Graduate Departments and Research Centers, 6 Interdisciplinary Centres, 629 Graduate Colleges and 232 Recognized Institutions affiliated to the University. Postgraduate education is conducted both on the campus and in the affiliated colleges and institutes. The University functions within the broad framework of the education policy laid down from time to time by Government of Maharashtra and Government of India. UGC and other funding agencies such as the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC), and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India provides grants for development of the university .
The university offers about 150+ programs in the Faculties of Science, Technology; Humanities; Commerce and Management; Interdisciplinary Subjects. Keeping in sync with the development around the globe and a need for multidisciplinary talent pool, the university has taken initiative in developing new programs like design thinking and liberal arts, where the student can opt for subjects across disciplines. A Choice based credit system permits students to take 25% of their credits from allied programs from other departments. Generally PG programs are for two years, however they may vary from 1 to 3 years. The learning is primarily through contact sessions with teachers who use the ICT. Keeping up with technological advancements, MOOCS and e-learning portals have also been developed. The students learn through digital media according to their convence. The library on Campus houses about 500,000 printed books, 17,000 periodicals and 1000s of e-resources to facilitate learning. PG Students interested in appearing for competitive exams like Civil services or banking have access to special sessions conducted by experts. More than 50% of students are funded through scholarships provided by the government and other agencies.
The university has signed MoU's with Learning Organizations abroad to facilitate student exchange programs. Local students are encouraged to apply for such schemes for learning abroad. The students from countries like US, Asian, African and European nations often come to this university as exchange students for studies in various disciplines ranging from sciences to languages like Sanskrit. The PG teachers are also encouraged to attend conference internationally to expand their knowledge.
The curriculum for PG programs is designed by stalwarts from academics and industries keeping in view the global challenges. It offers academic flexibility that allows updation of course anytime. Internships and project work has been a compulsory part of all PG programs to help students get a real time experience outside the academic setup. The university, due to the virtue of its location has a great advantage. The city has numerous national level research institutes , like NCCS, NCL, IITM, NCRA, IUCCA, IISER and industries belonging to IT sector like TCS, Infosys, Automobile manufacturing, Hotel industry etc. This helps in developing Industry-Academia Collaborations which benefit the PG students.
