Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki
About
The Sibelius Academy – established in 1882 – is one of the largest music academies in Europe, and as of 2013, it has been one of the three academies of the University of the Arts Helsinki (Uniarts Helsinki).
Since its founding, this cradle of higher education in classical music has added other genres to its palette: jazz and folk music have been taught at the academy since the early 1980s and music technology was added in the 1990s. The academy's goal is to train artists, teachers and other music professionals, all skilled in independent artistic work. All students have the freedom to build their own schedules to accommodate their individual professional goals. The Sibelius Academy consists of two faculties: The Faculty of Classical Music and the Faculty of Music Education, Jazz, Folk and Global Music, Music Technology and Arts Management. Additionally, the academy has a youth department (Junior Academy), a department for adult education and training, as well as two doctoral schools.
Uniarts Helsinki was founded in 2013, bringing together three prestigious Finnish art schools; the Academy of Fine Arts, the Sibelius Academy, and the Theatre Academy. Uniarts Helsinki’s mission is to provide high-quality education that takes student’s individual needs into consideration, encouraging them to hone their craft, think independently and push boundaries. Uniarts Helsinki fosters Finnish artistic heritage and aims to renew art.
