Every year, QS offers four exclusive scholarships to attendees of the World Grad School Tour: the QS Leadership Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies, worth US$10,000; the QS Scholarship for Academic Excellence, worth US$10,000; and two QS Community Scholarships, each worth $2,000.
In 2010, our four 2010 QS World Grad School Tour scholarship winners were: Plamena Pehlivanova, Li Ming, Jeronimo Terrones Portas and Lindsay Fromme.

Plamena Pehlivanova
Li Ming
Nationality: Chinese
Winner of: US$10,000 QS Leadership Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies
Graduate program: MSc in Biotechnology
Institution of study: University College London (UCL)
For University of Beijing graduate Li Ming, the motivation to pursue a career in the field of biotechnology started at home rather than in the classroom. “Both of my parents have suffered from rheumatoid arthritis for 20 years, and this was originally the reason I chose to specialize in biotechnology,” she explains. “My long-term dream is to make a scientific discovery that will help to cure this kind of disease.”
After visiting the QS World Grad School Tour event in Beijing, Li Ming was inspired to pursue her studies with an MSc in Biotechnology at University College London (UCL), and also to apply for the US$10,000 QS Community Scholarship. Li Ming impressed the judges with her passion for the field, and her clear commitment to using the skills and knowledge she will acquire during her studies at UCL to benefit others in her home country.
Jeronimo Terrones Portas
Nationality: Mexican
Winner of: US$ 2,000 QS Community Scholarship for MBA and Postgraduate Studies
Graduate program: MSc in Nanotechnology
Institution of study: University of Cambridge
A graduate of Universidad Iberoamericana (UIA) in Mexico City, Jeronimo Terrones Portas first became interested in nanotechnology when his uncles began taking him to conferences at the age of 16. His early start paid dividends, and he achieved the highest mark ever awarded in his undergraduate degree program.
Fittingly, Jeronimo will be using his US$2,000 QS Community Scholarship to pursue a Masters at one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, the University of Cambridge in the UK. Eventually Jeronimo intends to return to Mexico and start a nanotech consultancy firm, “solving nanotech problems in industry and providing a new perspective for businesses.”
Lindsay Fromme
Nationality: American
Winner of: US$2,000 QS Community Scholarship for MBA and Postgraduate Studies
Graduate program: Masters in Public Administration
Institution of study: University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Affairs
University of Vermont graduate Lindsay Fromme became interested in conservation following a period spent studying abroad in Belize as an undergraduate. This experience led Lindsay to major in environmental studies and community development, and her Masters in Public Administration will bring her one step closer to her goal of a career in environmental policy and management.
“My ambition is to work for an environmental organization, and I’m particularly interested in policy implementation and program management,” she says. An outdoors person who loves to travel, Lindsay has spent the summer volunteering on a community program to help get young people involved in conservation.
During the fall of 2010 and spring of 2011 the QS World Grad School Tour is offering a record $1,6 million in scholarships to tour attendees. As well as its own awards, QS is also offering scholarships in partnership with leading grad schools worldwide. These include EMLYON, France; NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia; Politecnico di Milano, Italy; Monterey Institute, India; Duisenberg School of Finance, Netherlands and Westminster Business School, UK.
To be eligible to apply for one of this year’s QS scholarships, candidates must attend one of the 2011 QS World Grad School Tour events. McClelland says: “We encourage applications from all World Grad School Tour attendees, regardless of their background or nationality. The high calibre and diversity of candidates that the tour attracts is reflected in the consistently high standard of QS scholarship applicants, and we are sure that the class of 2011 will be no exception.”
