As of last year, the QS World University Rankings by Subject now features a ranking of the world’s top veterinary schools. Based on a methodology which assesses employer and academic reputation, as well as research impact, the ranking aims to assist students who want to study veterinary science at one of the world’s leading departments in the field.

Top veterinary schools in the US & Canada
The US boasts a total of 17 representatives in the ranking, including seven in the top 20. Outside of the top 10 (above), these are: Colorado State University, Texas A&M University, Michigan State University and North Carolina State University.
Three Canadian universities rank among the top 50 veterinary science schools, including the University of Guelph in 8th place. The Université de Montréal and the University of Saskatchewan are ranked joint 44th and 50th for veterinary science.
Top veterinary schools in Europe
The UK is home to seven top veterinary schools, including three in the top 10. Just missing out on the top 10 are the University of Bristol and the University of Edinburgh, which share 11th place.
Elsewhere in Europe, Denmark’s sole entry, the University of Copenhagen, ranks 10th. Fellow Nordic countries Norway and Sweden also feature with one representative apiece – the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science (42nd) and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (30th).
Belgium, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain all have two entries in the ranking. As well as Utrecht University (7th), the Netherlands’ Wageningen University also performs well (19th). Belgium’s University of Ghent is 20th, while Spain’s Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona places 21st and Germany’s Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München is ranked 23rd for veterinary science.
Finally, Austria, Ireland and Switzerland also feature with one top veterinary science school each. Of these, the Swiss University of Zurich is the highest ranked at joint 25th.
Top veterinary schools in Australia & New Zealand
Australia has four representatives in this ranking of the world’s top 50 veterinary science schools. After the University of Sydney (9th), these are the University of Melbourne (18th), the University of Queensland (29th), and Murdoch University (37th).
Neighboring New Zealand has one entry, Massey University, which is ranked joint 25th for veterinary science.
Top veterinary schools in Latin America
Elsewhere in the world, Brazil is the only Latin American country to feature in the ranking. Its two entries, Universidade de São Paulo (USP) and Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" are ranked 38th and 46th for veterinary science.
