QS Best Student Cities ranking: 92nd
The unofficial capital of Siberia and considered Russia’s scientific center, Novosibirsk (pronounced no-vo-ser-bersk) is Russia’s third-largest city by population, with around 1.6 million residents. Founded in 1893, it’s one of the country’s fastest-growing cities and is the cultural and economic heart of Siberia, as well as a transport hub for the region.
Looking around the city, you’ll spot fine Tsar-era buildings and wooden-lace architecture similar to that found in nearby Tomsk. If you fancy soaking up some culture, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre is just one among many popular venues. For scientists, there’s Novosibirsk Zoo – a world-renowned scientific institute as well as a tourist attraction. Or if you’re into something a bit more macabre, the unique Museum of World Funeral Culture might be of interest.
With relatively low living costs and tuition fees, Novosibirsk appears in the top 10 for affordability in the Best Student Cities 2019, and you may be able to study in English.
Novosibirsk is home to one of Russia’s most respected universities, Novosibirsk State University, which is located in the world-famous research center of Akademgorodok (‘Academic Town’). In the survey used to compile the QS Best Student Cities ranking, one respondent shared what it’s like in Akademgorodok: “The atmosphere there is unique and amazing, probably the main reason for that is a huge amount of science centers and institutes, the university itself and, of course, people.”
