A fairly recent addition to the QS World University Rankings by Subject, QS’s annual ranking of the world’s top universities for dentistry aims to help prospective students identify top dental schools across the globe.

Top dental schools in the US & Canada 
Harvard University

The US boasts 15 entries among the world’s 50 top dental schools, with its two top 10 entries (above) followed closely by Harvard University (11th) and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (14th). Also within the top 30 are the University of Washington (15th), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, 19th), the University of Pennsylvania (21st), Boston University (24th) and the University of California, San Francisco (joint 30th).

Two universities in Canada feature among the top 50 dentistry schools; these are the University of British Columbia (22nd) and the University of Toronto (47th).

Top dental schools in Europe

Sweden claims two of the world’s top 10 dentistry schools: the Karolinska Institute (3rd), and the University of Gothenburg (5th). A third Swedish entrant, Malmo University, is ranked joint 30th.

The country with the most ranked schools in Europe, however, is the UK, with six representatives in the ranking. As well as King’s College London (4th) and UCL (University College London, 8th), other top dental schools in the UK include the University of Birmingham (joint 17th) and the University of Manchester (joint 34th).

Finland and Switzerland each offer three representatives within the dental school ranking, with the highest ranking Finnish entry being the University of Helsinki (joint 34th), while Switzerland boasts two dental schools within the top 25: the University of Bern (23rd) and the University of Zurich (joint 25th).

Denmark offers two of the world’s top dentistry schools, with the University of Copenhagen placing 13th, while Aarhus University ranks joint 17th for dentistry this year.

Other European countries featured in the dentistry ranking, with one entrant each, include Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain. Belgium’s KU Leuven places 7th, followed by Spain’s Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) (33rd) and the Netherlands’ Radboud University Nijmegen (41st).

Top dental schools in Latin America

While Latin America features less prominently in the dental school ranking, Brazil is a notable exception, claiming three entries among the world’s top 25 – the Universidade  de São Paulo in 9th place, followed by Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp, 20th) and Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho” (joint 25th).

Top dental schools in Asia 
Peking University

Hong Kong leads the dentistry ranking, with the University of Hong Kong in first place. Elsewhere in Asia, China, South Korea and Taiwan all also offer one top dental school. China’s Peking University is in 16th place, followed by South Korea’s Seoul National University (SNU) (28th) and Taiwan’s National Taiwan University (joint 45th).

Meanwhile in Japan, Tokyo Medical and Dental University claims 6th position for dentistry, while Osaka University appears in 28th place.

Top dental schools in Australia & New Zealand

Australia has three universities ranked among the world’s top 50 for dentistry. These are the University of Melbourne (27th), the University of Adelaide (29th) and the University of Sydney (42nd).

 New Zealand meanwhile offers one top dentistry school within its borders, which is the University of Otago, ranked 12th in the world for dentistry.
