Included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject since 2015, dentistry is one of 48 subjects to feature in this year’s ranking. The world’s top 50 universities for dentistry have been ranked using a methodology which assesses academic reputation, employer reputation and other factors.

Top dental schools in the US & Canada

The US boasts 12 entries in the dental school ranking, half of which are in the global top 20. Outside its top 10 entry in the table above, other top dentistry schools in the US include Harvard University (12th),  the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (13th), and the University of Washington (14th).

Two more top universities for dentistry can be found in neighboring Canada: the University of British Columbia (up from 23rd to 20th) and the University of Toronto (up from 48th to joint 42nd).

Top dental schools in Europe

Five of the 20 European entries in the dental school ranking are in the UK. Outside its two entrants in the top 10, the UK’s top dentistry schools are the University of Birmingham (19th), the University of Manchester (22nd), and Newcastle University (joint 40th).

Switzerland’s University of Bern joined the top 10 this year, climbing an impressive 15 places to rank seventh for dentistry this year. It has two more representatives in the top 25: the University of Zurich (11th, climbing 18 places from last year) and new entry the University of Geneva at 23rd.

Sweden also has two institutions in the top 10, and is additionally represented by Malmo University, which is up two places to rank joint 33rd in the world for dentistry this year.

The Netherlands has two entries in the dentistry ranking, with Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam (ACTA) up four places this year to now rank fourth for dentistry, while its other entry, Radboud University, is ranked joint 42nd. Denmark has two entrants, led by Aarhus University at 21st.

Norway, Belgium, Spain and Germany each have one entrant in the dentistry ranking, with Belgium’s sole entrant, KU Leuven, in the top 10, while Spain’s Complutense University of Madrid climbed from joint 36th to 30th this year for dentistry.

Top dental schools in Asia

Hong Kong’s only entrant, the University of Hong Kong, continues to rank first in the world for dentistry, with Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) joining it in the top 10 at fifth. Japan has one other entrant in the dental school ranking, Osaka University, which is ranked joint 42nd this year.

There are three Chinese institutions featured, led by Peking University at joint 15th. South Korea meanwhile has two representatives in the ranking, including Seoul National University at 26th. Finally, Saudi Arabia is new to the ranking with one entrant, King Saud University (45th).

Top dental schools in Latin America

Brazil is the only Latin American country to feature in the dental school ranking, hosting three of the world’s top universities for this subject: the Universidade de São Paulo at joint 15th, followed by Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp, 31st) and Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP, 37th).

Top dental schools in Australia & New Zealand

Australia is home to three of the world’s top universities for dentistry, with the University of Melbourne climbing four places to rank joint 24th this year, followed by the University of Adelaide (32nd) and the University of Sydney (up eight places to rank joint 33rd this year).

New Zealand is home to one top dental school, the University of Otago (ranked joint 27th in the world).
