You don’t have to look far for test tubes and bunsen burners at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which retains first place in this year’s chemistry rankings. Incredibly, five of the top seven are in exactly the same place as last year. Stanford University and Harvard University have swapped places in the only change.

104 of the top 500 universities in this year’s ranking may be based in the United States, but there are plenty of non-US options for prospective Chemistry students. Seven other countries are represented in the top 20, including Japan, China and Canada.
