The COCHIN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY was established in 1971 as University of Cochin, which was a commitment from the Government of Kerala in tune with the new scientific policy resolution adopted by the Central Government on 4th March 1958.  "Development of higher education with particular emphasis on post-graduate studies and research in applied science, technology, industry and commerce" was the specific intent of this venture. The University of Cochin was reorganized as Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) in February 1986. The University now has three campuses, one at Thrikkakara and another named Lakeside campus at Ernakulum and then a rural campus at Pulinkunnu, Alappuzha, the 'rice bowl' of Kerala. Located 12 km north of Ernakulam city, the main campus at Thrikkakara houses the Administrative Buildings of the University and various Departments.

The University's basic philosophy and goals find eloquent expression in its Coat of Arms emblazoning the motto 'Tejaswinavadhitamastu' which in essence means 'May the wisdom accrued deify us both - the teacher and the taught’ - and percolate to the universe in its totality.
