The town of Gujrat is of modern origin, but it occupies the site of an ancient city the foundation of which is attributed to Raja Bachan Pal, a Surajbansi Rajput, who emigrated from the lower Gangetic Doab. The ancient name of the city was Udanagri (the everlasting or sweet-smelling city). The mission of UOG is to equip the youth in the areas of economy, social policy and research, so as to enable them to compete at the international level; achieve excellence in research and teaching in all disciplines; and develop a world class centre of excellence in the industrial triangle of Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot to help the industry and society at large through research-based initiatives. An alumnus of prestigious seats of higher learning, including the University of Leeds, UK, Dr Zia Ul-Qayyum brings along teaching, research, and management experience of two and a half decade. An educationist of national and international acclaim, Dr Zia has to his credit conceiving, planning, establishing, and developing higher learning institutions and R&D organizations. His current assignment as Vice Chancellor of the University of Gujrat, precedes a challenging appointment as the head of recently established but thriving Campus of National University of Computer & Emerging Sciences at Chiniot-Faisalabad.
