Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University (hereafter Akhmet Yassawi University) was established in 1991 due to personal initiative of the Head of State, N.A. Nazarbayev and based on the Intergovernmental Agreement between Kazakhstan and Turkey nations to train modern highly qualified specialists from Turkic-speaking countries, within the spiritual center of the Turkic world – Turkestan city, and it became the first university receiving the status of an international institution of higher education.
Akhmet Yassawi University is one of the leading multi-disciplinary universities in Kazakhstan. The university is annually placed in the top ten of the national university rankings (6th place in 2018), as an innovative university that implements modern educational and scientific policies, based on the desire for continuous professional growth and personal development.
The university is one of the international category universities with title: “full university”, including medical and dental faculty. The multi-level educational system of the Akhmet Yassawi University includes: higher undergraduate and postgraduate education (bachelor degrees, master degrees, residency, internship and doctoral studies).
Admission to University is carried out on Kazakhstan state educational grants, on a contractual basis and Turkish educational grants (quotas). Students are trained in 155 majors.
The university has 10 faculties, including the Graduate School of Governance and Economics, a vocational college, 6 research institutes, and a specialized dissertation council for doctoral dissertations, more than 10000 students, interns, undergraduates, residents and doctoral students are trained at the university. In accordance with the Charter approved by the Governments of Kazakhstan and Turkey, the Supreme Governing Body is the Intergovernmental Board of Trustees (Ankara), providing general university management on the parity basis and consists of ten members. Five members, including the President/Rector, are appointed by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the other five by the Government of Turkey. Financing is made from the republican budget of Kazakhstan and from the budget of the Republic of Turkey.
Akhmet Yassawi University is the first university in the Turkic world where a dialogue of cultures and inter-ethnic tolerant education of young people from more than 19 countries of the world takes place, and in the context of modern globalization it has important ideological significance as an educational center spiritually uniting the Turkic-speaking world.
In May 2007, the University signed a Memorandum of Accession to the Bologna Declaration and in September 2010 signed the Great Charter of Universities, which is the basis of the Bologna Declaration.
Educational activities are carried out across 76 bachelor degree, 46 master programmes, 15 PhD, 9 residencies and 6 internships in natural, humanitarian, economic, legal, social, medical, technical sciences, education, business, services and art.
In 2018-2019 academic year, the university has 74 doctors, 292 candidates of science, 84 PhD doctors, 5% are foreign tutors from Turkey and other countries. Teaching is provided in Kazakh, Turkish, Russian and English languages.

Akhmet Yassawi University has 11 campuses. According to the equipment quality of the material and technical base, the university is considered to be one of the leading universities in Kazakhstan. The campus covers an area of 227 hectares. 88 hectares of which are set aside for a botanical garden, other 80 hectares for a residential complex of two-storey cottages for faculty members, and the rest 59 hectares occupy educational buildings, a sports complex, the Cultural Center with 800 seats and other buildings. The total area of outdoor and indoor sports facilities is over 50 000 sq. m. On the territory of the compound there is a complex of dorms for 1,500 beds, a living residence complex «Turan» and a student canteen for 400 seats. The university includes a complex of educational buildings and dormitories in the cities of Turkestan, Kentau, Shymkent, an 84-bed three-star hotel «Yassy», an indoor swimming pool.
For the construction of the campus were raised charitable funds from Turkey - about $ 100 million. The university complex (campus) is located at B. Sattarkhanov Avenue, 29. Construction of the complex was started in 1996. The project was developed by a team of leading Kazakh and Turkish experts.
The construction was carried out in two stages: the first stage included the erection of educational buildings for humanitarian, natural, medical faculties, administration and research buildings, the Cultural Center, dormitories, a sports complex, a polyclinic, economic facilities; the second stage involved the construction of educational buildings for natural sciences, engineering, research institutes, laboratories and a library for 400 thousand copies, dormitories, etc.
In November 2018, the Intergovernmental Board of Trustees approved the new General Plan of the Akhmet Yassawi University development, which provides for the construction of new buildings and dormitories for the next 5 years.
Akhmet Yassawi University is the only university in Kazakhstan that has two own clinics, a medical one with 120 beds (clinical and diagnostic center) and a dental clinic where medical students integrate theory with practice.
The Clinical Diagnostic Center (Clinic) was created as a powerful practical base of the university’s medical faculty, a modern progressive institution that fully meets the standards and equipped with modern diagnostic equipment.
The construction of the Clinical Diagnostic Center was funded by the Republic of Turkey, completed in 2006. Currently, the clinic provides high-quality medical services to residents of the city of Turkestan and other regions of the country.
The activity of the Clinic is implemented in three main areas: the provision of medical care, the learning of medical students and the postgraduate learning of doctors. It provides inpatient specialized and highly specialized medical care, specialized emergency medical care, and a trauma station is functioning.
Every year up to 65 thousand people seeking medical attention at the clinic, about 7 thousand undergo inpatient treatment. About 1,500 surgical interventions of increased complexity are performed.
From 2019, the dental clinic, equipped with modern equipment, has begun its work.
Distance educational technologies:
In 2001, an international virtual institute TurTEP (Turkish educational programmes in Turkish) was created, located in Ankara and implementing educational programs of 3 levels: college - bachelor - master in 16 specialties of secondary, higher and postgraduate education with a contingent of about 7,000 students from Europe, Turkey, CIS, Kazakhstan, 120 professors from leading universities in Turkey. Today TurTEP is a leader in the field of online education, the experience of which is adopted by leading universities in Turkey.
Based on the experience of TurTEP in January 2016, by the decision of the Intergovernmental Board of Trustees , the Center for Continuing and Distance Education in Turkestan was opened (distance education technology of instruction in the Kazakh language) in 5 master programmes in pilot mode. The accumulated experience of distance learning from 2019 will be implemented in 20 undergraduate majors and 8 master specialties.
The target audience of the Center for Continuing and Distance Education is filled with mid-career professionals, wishing to remotely get a second higher education or after a undergraduate degree, as well as master degrees regardless of the time and place of their stay based on the best modern educational practices, with maximum flexibility of graphics and educational trajectory.
During the development of educational programs, major specialists in industries were attracted, and the labor market and the specifics of learning specialists in other universities were studied in detail.
The goal of Center for Continuing and Distance Educationis to build a new vector of distance education in the field of higher and postgraduate education of the Republic of Kazakhstan based on international experience.
The campus has 5 outdoor soccer, basketball, volleyball and tennis sports grounds, and the indoor facilities include 12 indoor boxing, karate, wrestling, basketball, volleyball, football, fitness, and gym. There is a dining room and buffets in the educational and dormitory buildings.
Ecologically clean drinking water is provided through the 800-meter-deep well on the campus. The campus of the University is landscaped and well-infrastructured, with pedestrian and motorways.

The student administration of Akhmet Yassawi University is an organization whose members are elected by the student contingent and represent the interests of students in the administration of the university. Administration members take part in the work of all university committees, and have the right to vote. In the 2016-2018 school year, the duties of the student rector was Berikbayev Dias, from 2018 Tursynkhan Umit is student club rector.

On March 16, a 1-month emergency has been declared in the country and the quarantine has been introduced. The open day, scheduled for March, has been postponed to a later date. At the moment, we are expecting for instructions from the Ministry of Education and Science on an updated university admission procedures as well as the period for the start of Admissions Board work. - How is the university handling applicants whose exams have been cancelled?
Exams for high school graduates scheduled for March 2020 were postponed due to an emergency situation. Application submissions from college graduates and other applicants begin on April 15. Perhaps the online format will be considered.
- What advice is the university offering to applicants unable to take an English-language test due to centers being closed?
Applicants are offered to pass the exam in Kazakh, Turkish, English, Russian languages of their choice.
- How is the university supporting applicants whose visa applications have been delayed?
The visa support department operates within the Cooperation Center of the university. The following services can be found there to support foreign students such as: paperwork, visa support for students, registration and re-registration of documents of foreign citizens coming to study, in accordance with the requirements of the migration law of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The cost of visa as a public service: prior the obtaining of the visa, an application request should be addressed to the Vice President following the official payment of 0.5 MNU (Monthly Notional Unit) (1326 tenge + additional bank expenses) directly to the university account. Single entry visa costs 7 MNU (18,557 tenge + additional bank expenses in 2020) Multiple visa is 30 MNU (79 530 tenge + additional bank expenses in 2020). Documents from applicants are still being received in accordance with advised rules and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. - How are applications for university accommodation being handled?
There is university commission that resides to process all applications for accommodation. According to the regulations, the commission reviews the application and issues an onlinepermission for accommodation through the student center.
- Is the university making any changes to entry requirements (i.e. test results, required documents)?
The general requirements for admission to the University are carried out in accordance with the advised rules and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Currently, due to a state of emergency, university admission rules are being revised.
The university accepts potential students with a general secondary, technical and vocational, higher education. Those wishing to participate in the competition for the award of an educational grant of higher education or for tuition at the university are accepted according to the results of a Unified National Test.
Undergraduate students with four years of consecutive studies. For admission, they must present and submit the following documents:

3. Unified National Testing Certificate
4. Medical certificate
5. Passport
6. Six photos 3x4 cm.
Students can choose their undergraduate programs in a wide range of disciplines, from the Natural Sciences (Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and etc) to Humanities, Law, Languages and Journalism.
The Republic of Turkey annually provides 500 educational grants. Turkish grants are awarded to winners of the International and Republican Subject Olympiads, Republican Sports Competitions, Altyn Belgi holders, orphans and students with disabilities. Students - orphans and prize-winners of sports competitions are provided with free meals twice day in the canteen of the university. University students are provided with meals three times a day in the student cafeteria. Every year, the University hosts the Republican Subject School Olympiad "Yassawi" among students of 11 (12) grades. About 15 percent of students are foreign and their number is increasing every year. The admission of foreign citizens on a paid basis is carried out according to the results of the interview conducted by the university selection committee. Members of examination commissions conduct interviews with foreign citizens. During the interview, motivational and universal questions can be asked to clarify the applicant’s knowledge and interest in the chosen field.

Overall, in 2019, almost 1460 graduates of all major levels (incl.: bachelor's, internship, master's, residency and doctorate) were graduated from the University. To this date, the percentage of employment reached 75.3% in bachelor’s level and medical internship, 87.2% in master’s level and medical residency, 90% of which are the graduates of doctoral studies. Thus the complete employment rate for the University is 77.7%. At the republican level, the average employment rate stands at 72%, which makes the general employment of graduates high.
The university has a structural division "Center for internship and job placement", which provides assistance in employment, focused career growth of students and graduates. The center carries out joint work with employers at the republican and local level, namely with the branch of the National chamber of entrepreneurs of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Atameken" in Turkestan region, located in Turkestan city. On regular basis, the Center publishes all necessary information for graduate students, alumni and employers on the University website’s section “Alumni”. The center works closely with alumni, promoting their participation in various events organized by university. In addition to that, the University has established an alumni Association. Student organizations, clubs of Khoja Akhmet Yassawi International Kazakh-Turkish University
The student administration of Akhmet Yassawi University is an organization whose members are elected by the student contingent and represent the interests of students in the administration of the university. Administration members take part in the work of all university committees, and have the right to vote. In the 2016-2018 school year, the duties of the student rector was Berikbayev Dias, from 2018 Tursynkhan Umit is student club rector.
About 50 student clubs operate on the basis of Akhmet Yassawi University, including following organizations: the Board of student clubs "Shanyrak", "Youth of the Turkic world", intellectual debate club, "Heritage", «MedicalTokens», «Intellectual games», «International relations», «KVN IKTU Samuryktary», «Cinema and drawing», etc.
Leadership Development Program
Famous Kazakhstani and foreign representatives, politicians, business and science are invited to the leadership development program for lectures on personal development and leadership. This program provides an opportunity for its students to meet with such personalities as the Nobel Prize laureate Professor Sandemir Aziz, Representative of United Nations Department of Public Information in Kazakhstan Vlastemil Samek, Professor of High Energy Physics at Middle East Technical University Bilge Demirköz (Turkey), Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Astana Civil Service Hub, Alikhan Baimenov; Abykaev Nurtay Abykayevich - state political figure of Kazakhstan, diplomat; Turisbekov Zautbek Kausbekovich, First Deputy Chairman of the World Association of Kazakhs,
The university is known of students sports achievements. B.Sattarkhanov - the first Olympic boxing champion (2000), Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov – 1999 world champion, silver medalist of the 2000 Olympic Games.
Students live on campus and off campus. Our accommodation is mainly occupied by:

Student accommodation
More than 3200 students live at the university dormitories from near and far abroad states. There are following facilities are installed: a kitchen, laundry, computer classes, dining room, rooms for self-study with wireless Internet. Also: libraries, reading rooms, coffee shops, learning halls, etc. Nearby, there are summer sports complexes and football fields, an indoor swimming pool. Security operates 24/7 in the whole territory of campus and accommodation.

- What is the status of planned campus admission open days/tours?
On March 16, a 1-month emergency has been declared in the country and the quarantine has been introduced. The open day, scheduled for March, has been postponed to a later date. At the moment, we are expecting for instructions from the Ministry of Education and Science on an updated university admission procedures as well as the period for the start of Admissions Board work. The university holds on thesubmission of applications online.

- How is the university handling applicants whose exams have been cancelled?
Exams for high school graduates scheduled for March 2020 were postponed due to an emergency situation. Application submissions from college graduates and other applicants begin on April 15. Perhaps the online format will be considered.
- What advice is the university offering to applicants unable to take an English-language test due to centers being closed?
Applicants are offered to pass the exam in Kazakh, Turkish, English, Russian languages of their choice.
- How is the university supporting applicants whose visa applications have been delayed?
The visa support department operates within the Cooperation Center of the university. The following services can be found there to support foreign students such as: paperwork, visa support for students, registration and re-registration of documents of foreign citizens coming to study, in accordance with the requirements of the migration law of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The cost of visa as a public service: prior the obtaining of the visa, an application request should be addressed to the Vice President following the official payment of 0.5 MNU (Monthly Notional Unit) (1326 tenge + additional bank expenses) directly to the university account. Single entry visa costs 7 MNU (18,557 tenge + additional bank expenses in 2020) Multiple visa is 30 MNU (79 530 tenge + additional bank expenses in 2020). Exit visa: 0.5 MNU (1326 tenge + additional bank expenses in 2020). Invitation 0.5 MNU (1326 tenge + additional bank expenses in 2020).
- Is the university still accepting applications? Are there any restrictions being placed on international applicants?
Documents from applicants are still being received in accordance with advised rules and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. - How are applications for university accommodation being handled?
There is university commission that resides to process all applications for accommodation. According to the regulations, the commission reviews the application and issues an onlinepermission for accommodation through the student center.
- Is the university making any changes to entry requirements (i.e. test results, required documents)?
The general requirements for admission to the University are carried out in accordance with the advised rules and instructions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Currently, due to a state of emergency, university admission rules are being revised.
The university accepts potential students with a general secondary, technical and vocational, higher education. Those wishing to participate in the competition for the award of an educational grant of higher education or for tuition at the university are accepted according to the results of a Unified National Test.
Undergraduate students with four years of consecutive studies. For admission, they must present and submit the following documents:

2. School certificate (certificate of secondary education)
3. Unified National Testing Certificate
4. Medical certificate
5. Passport
6. Six photos 3x4 cm.
Students can choose their undergraduate programs in a wide range of disciplines, from the Natural Sciences (Chemistry, Geography, Mathematics, Physics and etc) to Humanities, Law, Languages and Journalism.
The Republic of Turkey annually provides 500 educational grants. Turkish grants are awarded to winners of the International and Republican Subject Olympiads, Republican Sports Competitions, Altyn Belgi holders, orphans and students with disabilities. Students - orphans and prize-winners of sports competitions are provided with free meals twice day in the canteen of the university. University students are provided with meals three times a day in the student cafeteria. Every year, the University hosts the Republican Subject School Olympiad "Yassawi" among students of 11 (12) grades. About 15 percent of students are foreign and their number is increasing every year. The admission of foreign citizens on a paid basis is carried out according to the results of the interview conducted by the university selection committee. Members of examination commissions conduct interviews with foreign citizens. During the interview, motivational and universal questions can be asked to clarify the applicant’s knowledge and interest in the chosen field.

Overall, in 2019, almost 1460 graduates of all major levels (incl.: bachelor's, internship, master's, residency and doctorate) were graduated from the University. To this date, the percentage of employment reached 75.3% in bachelor’s level and medical internship, 87.2% in master’s level and medical residency, 90% of which are the graduates of doctoral studies. Thus the complete employment rate for the University is 77.7%. At the republican level, the average employment rate stands at 72%, which makes the general employment of graduates high.
The university has a structural division "Center for internship and job placement", which provides assistance in employment, focused career growth of students and graduates. The center carries out joint work with employers at the republican and local level, namely with the branch of the National chamber of entrepreneurs of the Republic of Kazakhstan "Atameken" in Turkestan region, located in Turkestan city. On regular basis, the Center publishes all necessary information for graduate students, alumni and employers on the University website’s section “Alumni”. The center works closely with alumni, promoting their participation in various events organized by university. In addition to that, the University has established an alumni Association. The alumni Association in close cooperation with University takes joint part in improving the image of the university. Moreover, they contribute to the expertise of educational programs aimed at improving the quality of training of the future specialists.
