The KL College of engineering was started in the Academic Year 1980-81 and attained autonomous status in 2006 and conferred with Deemed University (Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation Deemed to be University) status in the Year 2009 under Section 3 of UGC act1956.

The Vision of the University is to be globally renowned and the mission is to impart higher education and to undertake research and extension with emphasis on application and innovation that cater to the emerging societal needs through all-round development of students of all sections enabling them to be globally competitive and socially responsible citizens with intrinsic values. NAAC assessed our University and accredited for a period of five years from 2018 to 2023 with CGPA of 3.57 with A++ grade in the 33rd meeting of the standing committee held on 2nd November 2018. Further to state on 10th December 2018 the Commission in its 536th meeting has accorded Category-1 status to  University and made us eligible for all benefits stipulated under clause 4 (Dimensions of Autonomy for Category-1 Universities) of the UGC regulations. The institute is also having ISO 9001-2015 Certification. NIRF awarded 50th and 56th Rank to the University for 2019, and 2018 years respectively. The KLEF has also achieved All India 1 st Rank under Swacctha Institute Rankings-2019 for Deemed  Institutions. KLEF is one of the institutions which is awarded Swachhata Ranking out of 15,000  institutions in India in 2019. One of the KLEF girl student “V.JyothiSurekha” has received the “Arjuna Award” from Hon`ble President of India in the year 2017.

The University has done research to find local, regional and global needs and accordingly developed and delivering the programs that meets the needs. The curriculum is enriched based on the Feedback received from all stake holders. The University offers number of academic flexibility for students to choose from. The students can learn at their pace and available time. The University has introduced student centric outcome based education. The university has come to a stage of computing the extent to which the mission and vision of the university has been achieved based on the achievement of program specific educational objectives and coursed based outcomes.

Research has taken a quantum step towards quality improvement through publishing in Scopus Indexed journals building a h-Index of 36. KLEF has established an ecosystem to promote innovations including a centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship development leading to start-ups in different disciplines. The University is also proud that 26 start-ups have been commenced and as many students have been converted as individual entrepreneurs apart from many students who have joined their family businesses. The faculty are encouraged to take up projects from Government as well as Non-Government Agencies. KLEF has initiated promotion of institutional social responsibility through activities undertaken in the neighborhood rural community. They aim at combining social needs, Professional expertise and skillful implementation of schemes. From 2012 KLEF extension activities center (EAC) has taken up several initiatives to launch programs involving the faculty, students and the local inhabitants.
