Lingnan University is a tightknit liberal arts college founded in Hong Kong in 1967. Based in the northern part of Tuen Mun, Lingnan University is just a brief 40-minute subway ride from the Hong Kong’s thriving business district.

They offer courses within the fields of humanities, business and the social sciences, primarily instructed in English, with some courses taught in Cantonese or Mandarin.

From international scholarships to setting up a peer-mentoring scheme to help students acclimate, Lingnan University has taken many steps in recent years to attract international students and foster links with universities abroad. In fact, more than 85% of undergraduate students spent a semester or winter/summer program abroad in 2019, while 15% of students are international, with 40 nationalities are represented on campus.

Lingnan University is the first university in Hong Kong to have a service learning team set up to help students share their knowledge and expertise with charities and communities through volunteering. Meanwhile, its careers guidance team offers internship opportunities, both overseas and mainland, to students seeking to gain real work experience, which perhaps explains the university’s strong employability statistics. Indeed, as many as 82% of its graduates are in employment and 13% are in further studies within six months of graduation.

In terms of its facilities, Lingnan University is unrivalled for the region. It boasts a library with over 538,000 items, which includes books and audio-visual materials, a sports complex with a tennis court, squash courts, table tennis rooms, a swimming pool and a fitness centre.

Lingnan University offers inexpensive on-campus accommodation to all admitted students, even beyond their first year, from a modest US$570 per term. The university’s 10 hostel blocks with a total 2,600 beds have their own laundromats, air conditioners, vending machines, kitchens, television sets and parking. The university offers free repair, maintenance, cleaning and garbage disposal services.

Building on rich electronic resources comprising more than 1.4 million of e-books, 0.92 million of e-journals and more than 300 databases, plus the print collections of more than 0.5 million of books, bound journals, and print journals, the Library provides a suite of learning, teaching and research support services ranging from information literacy workshops, course readings, research consultation, copyright support, to scholarly communication services to support the learning and research journey of students and faculty. Hostel life is an essential part of Lingnan’s liberal arts education. In 2014.  We now have 10 hostel blocks with 2,600 hostel places. The diverse hostel activities and immense interaction with students of different disciplines and cultural background creates an environment that is conducive to transformation of students from protected teenagers into independent and caring young leaders of broad exposure and international perspectives.


Experiential learning is conducive to students’ whole-person development. The co-curricular provisions offer a wide range of learning opportunities complementing the formal curriculum. Students also have many opportunities to learn through participating in field trips and study tours.


Our students participate in Exchange Programmes to widen their horizons and acquire the necessary global-mindedness during their university education. Over the years, Lingnan has established exchange partnerships with 180+ higher education institutions in about 40 countries which provide abundant exchange opportunities each year. About 80% of our undergraduate students can spend a term abroad for exchange or participate in short-term summer programmes.


We are the first university in Hong Kong to set up an individual office in 2006 to focus on Service-Learning, which enables students to put theory into practice and deliver meaningful services to the community using their academic knowledge. The Office of Service-Learning makes available a wide variety of local, mainland and overseas for students. In 2016-17, Service-Learning will become a graduate requirement, signifying our commitment to community engagement and deep learning through experience.


We offer a wide range of overseas, mainland and local internship opportunities for students to gain experience in the real working situations, broaden their exposure in culturally diverse and rich environments, and equip them with the requisite skills for future career development.

COVID-19 Information:

  • What is the status of planned campus admission open days/tours? 

All public events and visits are suspended due to COVID-19.  The University currently has no plans to organise any on-campus admission open days/tours in the near future but will provide the admission information via online channels.  Promotion of TPg and RPg programmes will continue to be conducted through multiple channels including but not limited to online and social media platforms.  TPg programmes also conduct online promotion seminars through education agencies. 

  • How can applicants contact the university about their application?

Applicants can contact the School of Graduate Studies for RPg admission/general TPg admission enquiries or individual TPg programme offices and departments/units concerned directly through email, phone and online audio/video channels during normal office hours.  Contact details of the School of Graduate Studies and individual TPg programmes are available at https://www.ln.edu.hk/sgs/.

  • How is the university handling applicants whose exams have been cancelled?

Conditional offers will be made to eligible applicants.  For TPg programmes having two intakes in a year, viz. September and January, affected applicants will be considered for admission in January 2021 if they cannot submit all necessary documents due to the delay of graduation/obtainment of language test results before programme commencement in Sept 2020.  Similar flexibility will also be applied to applicants of RPg programmes.        

  • What advice is the university offering to applicants unable to take an English-language test due to centers being closed?

Flexibility within the admission process is given as far as possible, and applicants are given the flexibility to fulfil the University’s English requirement via different means, e.g. IELTS, TOFEL or the English course offered by our own University. During the coronavirus epidemic, applicants are advised to attempt the English test at home if this method is available by the test provider, e.g. TOEFL in some regions. In addition, conditional offers will be made to applicants and, if necessary, grace period will be granted on a case-by-case base for the affected applicants in gathering required documents and fulfilling the University English language requirement for admission. 

  • How is the university supporting applicants whose visa applications have been delayed?

The School of Graduate Studies for RPg and individual programme offices for TPg will be in touch with offer holders with the steps leading up to registration and will notify any affected applicants should alternative arrangements apply.  Applicants can contact the School of Graduate Studies or their respective TPg programmes in case there are any questions regarding visa applications.  If applicable, late registration may be arranged.
    

  • Is the university still accepting applications? Are there any restrictions being placed on international applicants?

Admission is on-going and applications are considered for TPg programmes for the time being.  The University welcomes both local and non-local applicants to apply for our programmes and we will ensure applications from all applicants are considered fairly and that there are no discrimination on the grounds of sex, age, race, religion, ethnic origin or physical disability.  Application deadlines of TPg programmes for 2020-21 intake have been extended in view of the cancellation of public examinations.  Late applications to TPg and RPg programmes will be considered subject to the availability of places.

Students with needs for a student hostel place can submit an application to the Student Services Centre but hostel places are subject to availability.  They will be required to follow the University’s preventive measures against COVID-19 and to complete a health declaration form before coming to campus.  For students entering Hong Kong, they must declare their travel history by filling in the health declaration form and undergo a 14-day compulsory self-quarantine imposed by the HKSAR Government before their admission to the hostels. Assistance will be provided to students.

The University continues to observe the latest guidance and policies from the HKSAR government and the Health, Safety and Environment Committee of the University and will review its arrangements as and when necessary.       

  •   Is the university making any changes to entry requirements (i.e. test results, required documents)?

The University currently has no plan to make changes to its admission requirements for TPg and RPg programmes but will closely monitor the updates of Education Testing Service (ETS) and relevant exam boards around the world and will promulgate corresponding changes as and when necessary.
