Library

LSHTM’s Library & Archives Service provides access to a huge range of books, journals and electronic resources in the field of international public health and tropical medicine. Apart from the library, there are many others within easy reach, including the University of London Senate House Libraries, and the British Library, which are available for use of their students.

Accommodation

LSHTM offers guidance about accommodation options and signpost students to further information and resources.

Some of the options are:

• University of London Student Homes - The Student Homes scheme offers an easy way for LSHTM students to secure affordable private accommodation managed by University of London Housing Services. Most properties are in Zone 2 or 3, within easy commuting distance of LSHTM.
• University (Intercollegiate) Halls of Residence - These are student halls of residence, with rooms allocated to the different institutions belonging to the University of London (of which LSHTM is one).
• Private Halls of Residence - Privately-run student halls range from very basic and quite affordable (sometimes run by a charitable organisation), to the more luxury end of the range, more like a boutique hotel.

Student support

LSHTM has a Student Support Service to assist students during their studies. The service can advise students on non-academic issues such as accommodation or financial worries which arise during studies. A counselling service is also provided for students experiencing anxiety or stress, study-related or otherwise. All meetings are strictly confidential and impartial.

Location

Voted no.1 student city by QS Top Universities in 2018, London truly is a global city. There are more international students here than in any other city in the world and its cultural wealth and diversity are reflected in its theatre, music, art and cuisine.

Lively cafés, markets and shops fill London’s neighbourhoods, while away from the buzz, students can relax in one of the many Royal Parks or along the River Thames.

LSHTM is located in Bloomsbury - an area with a rich academic, medical and literary history and which is characterised by beautiful Georgian buildings and garden squares. It is situated close to partner institutions of the University of London as well as the world-famous British Museum, and a short walk from Oxford Street, Soho and Covent Garden.

Campus life

LSHTM provides international student support to make their learning experience more enjoyable. It offers assistance even before arrival via its social media groups and live Q&A sessions online on topics from visas to accommodation to programme content.

Student Welcome Week

For the benefit of new students, LSHTM organises the annual Student Welcome week. During this week, students can learn about life in London, including healthcare, banking and transport. It’s also a great initiative for participants to meet fellow students before the term starts.

Students' Representative Council (SRC)

The Students' Representative Council (SRC) is an independent, student-led body that represents the interests of master's and research degree students at LSHTM. All students registered for a programme of study with LSHTM become members of the SRC for the period of their registration unless they specifically opt out. All programmes of study have at least one elected student representative.

Master's entry requirements

The normal minimum entry requirement to be considered for master’s degrees admission at the School is at least one of the following:

• a second-class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject
• a qualification appropriate to the course of study to be followed, in medicine, dentistry or veterinary studies
• a master’s degree in a subject appropriate to the course of study to be followed
• a professional qualification appropriate to the programme of study to be followed

MPhil and PhD requirements

At least one of the following:

• a master’s degree in a subject appropriate to the course of study to be followed (recommended)
• a qualification appropriate to the course of study to be followed, in medicine, dentistry or veterinary studies
• an upper second-class honours degree from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard, in a relevant subject.

If English is not your first language, you will need to meet the English language requirements: Band B

English Language Requirements

As part of the application process, applicants are required to demonstrate how they meet the School’s minimum English Language requirements. This is particularly important for applicants requiring a Tier 4 Student Visa, as the UK Home Office dictates that every student from outside the UK and European Union (EU) must show evidence of a minimum level of English language ability (called CEFR B2 level) in order to be granted a Tier 4 Student visa and study in the UK.

Additionally, the School asks for English language proficiency levels that are necessary for our academic programmes, which is slightly higher than the Common European Framework for languages (CEFR) B2 level. These academic requirements also apply to EU students, although these do not require a Tier 4 Student visa.

LSHTM graduates work and live all over the world. Study opportunities allow students to develop careers responding to global health challenges. Clinicians, policymakers, academics and laboratory scientists come to LSHTM for advanced research training, and many of their alumni go on to careers in health ministries, universities, hospitals and international NGOs.
