Located in Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala, the University of San Carlos of Guatemala is notable for being the oldest and largest university in the country. In fact, only three other universities in the Americas are older than the University of San Carlos of Guatemala, as it was founded in 1676 by Charles II of Spain. The university has undergone several transformations over the years, but today consists of 40 academic units: 10 colleges, 10 schools, 19 regional centers and one technical institute. Over 150,000 students are enrolled for study here.
