The Universidad de Santiago de Chile is one of the nation's largest state universities. Combining a view to the future with a rich heritage of 150 years of educational service, the university's highly trained staffs prepares undergraduate and graduate professionals. In addition, the institution conducts academic research, provides continuing education and technical assistance. It maintains permanent contact with private enterprises and government institutions and carries out scientific, technological and student exchanges with national and international universities. The University is a Higher Education Institution with a long tradition and has played an important role in national development. Created 153 years ago as the Arts and Trade School, it was later united with other educational institutions and diverse provincial branches to form the State Technical University in 1947, becoming the present-day University. Throughout its History an ongoing process of change and transformation to the original technical school has represented it. It continued as a scientific and technological University, taking on the challenge of providing professional instruction for the nation's industrialization. It is a University with diverse undergraduate and graduate programs, additional educational offerings, with an emphasis on academic excellence and humanistic values. The University's is dedicated to a concern for the creation, preservation, development, and sharing of knowledge through up-to-date research, teaching and extension in sciences, arts, humanities and technological fields. The University also stresses a deep concern with the society and the nation's future, considering the development of critical thinking in its academics and students of critical importance in a pluralistic environment where expressing freedom and tolerance are central. To accomplish this, the University relies on an excellent academic staff, dedicated officials and a student body whose quality and diversity will form the intellectual, scientific and technical frameworks of the future. The University task has been extended to technical assistance, working with national and international private institutions and governmental bodies, as well as creating scientific, technological and cultural exchanges with foreign and national Universities. The University has a dynamic and flexible attitude, in order to recognize and address the challenges in today's community. It is a University characterized by a vision of forming the next generation of leaders both at home and abroad. It is a University categorized by the relevance of its academic activities, management, scientific and technological tradition and its contribution for national development and the integral growth of an individual with new aspirations and dreams. For this, the Institution attaches a great importance to the values that define it as a University community, including academic excellence, professional and ideological variety and diversity, tolerance for and respect of differences of opinion, academic freedom and the free development of ideas. It is also important to note that, as a University with a vision of personal and institutional cooperation, there is a need to support those social sectors that lack economic resources. Through all of this is the central importance of the humanistic character of our instruction, based on dignity, justice, solidarity and a critical spirit.. The University is dedicated not only to cultivating knowledge, but also to breaking new frontiers in providing instruction for leaders in development in diverse fields, stressing their interrelationship. Because of its historic union with the State, the University is dedicated to social service, the relevance and excellence of academics and student growth. It is a University of qualitative research and graduate programs and support for students who lack economic resources. It is a University with a centralized campus that facilitates all aspect of student life.
