Founded in 1942, Universidad de Sonora (UNISON) is a world-class university situated in the north west of Mexico. It offers 65 bachelor’s programs, 31 master’s degrees, 7 certificates and 13 PhDs taught in Spanish in the following subject areas:

One of the best and largest universities in the region

UNISON ranks 25 among the best universities in Mexico in the QS Mexico University Rankings 2019.

With more than 31,000 students, UNISON amounts for as much as 40% of all university enrollment in the country.

At the moment, about 92% of UNISON’s teaching staff hold a graduate degree, including 71% with a PhD. The quality of its research output is one of the university’s strong points.


… And an excellent track record in employability

More than 94% of students in the 2015 cohort found a job within 12 months of graduation, 84.9% of whom found a job within six months. According to the same survey, students rated the relevance of their training an average score of 6.2 out of 7.

To encourage intercultural exchange, UNISON has links with over 200 institutions abroad, to give students the chance to spend a semester or two abroad in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, or Switzerland.

•             What is the status of planned campus admission open days/tours? 
The campus remains closed to the general public due to the government’s orders. There are no open days/tours until further notice.
 
•             How can applicants contact the university about their application?
The admissions process for Universidad de Sonora is done fully online. All comments and questions are received through the websites https://admision.unison.mx/contacto.php, https://aspirantesposgrado.uson.mx/, and e-mail admision@unison.mx. Admission documentation is still being received and the deadline for reception will be announced once safety contingencies are lifted.
 
•             How is the university handling applicants whose exams have been cancelled?
The entrance exam period for undergraduate applicants is being rescheduled, and the new dates will be announced once safety contingencies are lifted. Graduate entrance exams are being postponed to May-June, and interviews are performed online.
 
•             What advice is the university offering to applicants unable to take an English-language test due to centers being closed?
Due to the contingencies placed by our government in response to the COVID-19 situation, any foreign language tests remain unscheduled until further notice.
 
•             How is the university supporting applicants whose visa applications have been delayed?
For graduate applicants, they only need to obtain their visa once they have obtained the admission letter to the program of their choosing. Since admittance to graduate programs has not begun yet, there have been no cases of visas being delayed. In case there is a problem with a visa being issued, students could take online courses, depending on the judgment of the program’s coordinator.
 
•             Is the university still accepting applications? Are there any restrictions being placed on international applicants?
The university is still accepting applications and no restrictions have been placed on international applicants.
 
•             How are applications for university accommodation being handled?
Not applicable, as the university has no on campus housing.
 
•             Is the university making any changes to entry requirements (i.e. test results, required documents)?
Entry requirements have not changed.


Admissions and costs
Undergraduate entry requirements include a high school diploma, a filled in application form, passing the admissions tests and proof of your proficiency in English. Keep in mind, you’ll also need a passport, student visa and health insurance to enter the country.

Tuition fees at undergraduate level include an MX$1,600 enrollment fee  (≈US$89) and MX$1,280 (≈US$72). Depending on your grades, though, you may be eligible for a tuition fee reduction of up to 100%.

The cost of living in Hermosillo, where the university is situated, should be no more than US$700 a month, including accommodation, groceries, and transportation, though of course this figure can vary depending on the type of the accommodation you seek (whether a hotel or flatshare). To be eligible for postgraduate study, you would need a bachelor's degree, a GPA of 8.0, proof of your proficiency in Spanish and English (with a TOEFL score of 450), the GRE subject test (depending on the course), two letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a research proposal (only for PhDs).

UNISON offers all students with an average grade of somewhere between 80 and 85 a tuition fee reduction of 50% in their second semester.  This figure can rise up to 100% depending on their grade.

Students can also apply for a CONACYT scholarship for a monthly stipend of approximately MX$13,769 (≈US$770), provided they have a GPA of 8.0. Find out more about it here.
