The Universidad Nacional de Luján is located in the small city of Luján, which is around 68km north-west of Buenos Aires. It was initially founded in 1972, although due to political instability was briefly closed in 1980 before reopening in 1984.

The university has its headquarters in Luján, as well as three regional centers in the cities of Campano, San Miguel, and Chivilcoy. The objective of these regional centers is to bring a good quality university offering to a broad spectrum of the population. There are four main departments at the Universidad Nacional de Luján: the Department of Basic Sciences, the Department of Social Sciences, the Department of Education, and the Department of Technology.

The city of Luján is known as La Capital de la Fe (Capital of the Faith), due to the presence of the Luján Basilica, a large neo-gothic basilica dating from 1889, built to honor the patron saint of Argentina, the Virgin of Luján. More than six million people annually make pilgrimages to the Basilica, many walking from Buenos Aires.
