Established in 2005, Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC) - otherwise known as the Federal University of ABC - is based in Santo André, a municipality in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. After opening, the university attracted global media attention for being the first university in Brazil to only employ professors with doctorates.
A modern institution, the Federal University of ABC follows an unconventional approach to its undergraduate teaching. Whereas other universities have a fixed curriculum, students at the Federal University of ABC can choose the order in which to study their subjects. After completing their initial studies, students can then graduate with a bachelor's degree in Science and Technology, or they can choose to stay on for an additional engineering bachelor's. Master's degrees are also available.
