The general access requirement is the Italian school leaving qualification awarded after completion of 12 years of schooling and passing the relevant State examination; comparable foreign qualifications may also be accepted. Admission to some degree courses may be based on specific course requirements.
In 1999 a Ministerial Decree set up the new university system introducing the following new academic qualifications organised in three cycles:
First cycle – Undergraduate studies
Second cycle – Graduate studies
Third cycle – Postgraduate studies: Research doctorate degree - Specialisation degree
FIRST CYCLE (BACHELOR'S DEGREE): these degree programmes provide students with an adequate command of general scientific methods and contents as well as with specific professional skills.
