AFTRS is a federal statutory authority. It was established in 1973 by the Australian Film, Television and Radio School Act 1973). As a statutory body it also operates under the Commonwealth Authorities and Companies Act 1997.
AFTRS is governed by a Council, responsible to the Federal Parliament through the Minister for the Arts. The portfolio department is the Ministry of Communications and the Arts.
