SISSA is one of the leading scientific institutions in Italy for postgraduate training in Mathematics, Neuroscience and Physics.
Students are selected yearly by means of an entrance examination held in Trieste; non-EU students can also be admitted through a preselection based on academic qualifications only. At the end of a three- or four-year course of study and research students are admitted to the final examination to obtain the Ph.D. degree, equivalent to the Italian "Dottore di ricerca".
There are twelve courses available:
Astroparticle Physics
Astrophysics
Cognitive Neuroscience
Functional and Structural Genomics
Geometry and Mathematical Physics
Joint PhD Program in Molecular Biology
Mathematical Analysis, Modelling, and Application
Neurobiology
Physics and Chemistry of Biological Systems
Statistical Physics
Theoretical Particle Physics
Theory and Numerical Simulation of Condensed Matter
To help those students who wish to sit the entrance exam for PhD courses, SISSA offers candidates the possibility to spend a period at the School before the exam.
SISSA offers the possibility to Italian and foreign graduate students to obtain fellowships by means of a competition based on academic qualifications only. The activity will last from two up to twelve months. To the admitted candidates a fellowship of the amount of € 1000 net per month will be assigned. Travel expenses will be covered up to € 1000 gross according to the place of residence of the candidate.
The School does not only offer traditional PhD courses, but also Professional Master's courses at the highest level:
Master in Science Communication "Franco Prattico" (MCS)
Master in High Performance Computing (MHPC)
Thanks to several agreements with other universities, five joint curricula have been created. These curricula are aimed to those students who wish to pursue a high level training for future research activity.
Neurosciences curriculum (with University of Trieste)
Cognitive Neuroscience curriculum (with University of Trento)
Mathematics curriculum (with University of Trieste)
Physics curriculum (with University of Trento)
Condensed Matter Physics Master-PhD programme (with University of Trieste and University of Udine)
Thanks to another agreement with the Politecnico di Torino, ICTP and some universities of Paris area, SISSA is part of the "International Master Course in Physics of Complex Systems".
