Northeast Normal University is an institution of higher learning under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education, being selected as one of the universities given priority in construction in the 211 Project. The NENU's predecessor is the Northeast University. It was the first comprehensive university founded by the Communist Party in Northeast China in 1946. The school was renamed Northeast Normal University according to the development needs of national education in 1950.NENU presently comprises 22 schools, 59 undergraduate specialties, 170 M.A. degree specialties, and 129 Ph.D. degree specialties, 34 disciplines authorized by MA degrees?22 disciplines authorized by Doctoral degrees, 12 Post-doctoral R&D Stations. It offers one Ph.D. of Education degree specialty, 17 M.A. degree specialties and the graduate school. There are 5 national key disciplines including Principles of Education, History of the World, Cell Biology, Ecology, Ideological and Political Education. History, Chinese and Biology are personnel training and scientific research bases of the national fundamental disciplines of arts and sciences. The National Engineering Laboratory of drug genes and proteins screening are national laboratories. In addition, it also possesses laboratories and research centers are authorized by the country, ministry and province as well as National Experimental Center of Basic Education and other several national training programs and research institutes.
