Based in the Japanese capital of Tokyo, Soka University was designated as one of the country’s top global universities by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2014. The Top Global University project was designed by the government to enhance the globalization of Japan’s universities to benefit their graduates. The hope is to encourage more international students to enroll in Soka University and the other institutions included in the project.
More than 50,000 students have graduated from Soka University since it opened its doors to students at the start of the 1970s. The university name ‘Soka’ means ‘value creation’ and the university strives to create value in the wider world by following certain key principles. These include being the highest seat of learning for humanistic education and being a fortress for the peace of humankind.
Over the years, the university has awarded honorary doctorates to notable political figures from around the world including Rosa Parks, Fidel Castro and Mikhail Gorbachev.
