About
Universidad Simón Bolívar is a non-profit higher education institution dedicated to comprehensive training, the development of research and innovation, which, articulated with the Government, the productive sector and the community in general, responds to the commitment with the development of the social, political, cultural and economic environment. It was founded in 1972 and is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Colombia, after the Ministry of National Education awarded it a high quality accreditation in 2016. It is also considered one of the Universities with the greatest social impact worldwide.
The University has five faculties from which 29 undergraduate academic programs are offered (26 professionals, 1 technological and 2 technical) and 52 graduate programs (5 doctorates, 20 masters, 8 medical and surgical specializations, 19 university specializations and 1 technological specialization). In order to support the academic processes, the Institution has 871 Full Time Equivalent professors (TCE for its acronym in Spanish).
The University has a consolidated research and innovation system, out of which 3 research centers are part:
- Corporate Growth Center (MacondoLab)
- Life Sciences Research Center (CICV)
- José Consuegra Higgins Social Innovation and Research Center (CIISO)
44 research groups recognized by the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation-COLCIENCIAS, of which 33 (75%) are ranked at a high level: A1 and A.
209 researchers recognized by Colciencias: 5 Emeritus, 24 Senior, 110 Associates, 70 Junior
In addition, it has strategic alliances with government entities, the productive sector, NGO´s and the society in general, for the development of activities and joint projects aimed at social development.
The University´s strategic planning is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals declared by the United Nations.

Universidad Simón Bolívar physical facilities are located in the city of Barranquilla in the emblematic El Prado neighborhood, declared of “cultural interest” due to its architectural value by the Heritage Directorate of the Ministry of Culture, and in Cúcuta, they are located in Downtown´s historic neighborhood known as La Playa. The Barranquilla campus has 154 classrooms with a capacity for 5,698 people, and the Cúcuta campus has 70 classrooms with a capacity for 2,598 people. All facilities are accessible for people with reduced mobility.
For the quality development of its academic activities, the University has:
- Institute for graduate programs
- 32 laboratories and specialized classrooms, and 36 practice sites and computer technology rooms, to support the teaching – learning process
- One central library and eight satellite libraries, to support the development of academic and research activities, having at its disposal 371,572 book titles, 448,512 book volumes, 317,258 electronic books and magazines and 84 data bases.

- Institute of Foreign Languages (ILE), through which English, German and French courses are offered.
- José Consuegra Higgins Theater, “La Perla” Culture House, Bolivarian Bibliographic Museum and the Caribbean Authors Bibliographic Museum, through which the cultural and architectural heritage is preserved
- Conciliation and Arbitration Center
- Law program conciliation centers
- 13 auditoriums (11 in Barranquilla and 2 in Cúcuta)
The University also has a wide range of activities organized by the Welfare Department, which include sport, artistic and cultural events. For this purpose, there are 5,442.88 m2 in Barranquilla and 2,179.80 m2 in Cúcuta for recreation; 11,980.74 m2 for sports venues in Barranquilla and 13,555.16 m2 in Cúcuta.
At Universidad Simón Bolívar we welcome students from all over the world and offer housing advice for international students who wish to live near the university campus. Our two campuses, Barranquilla (Atlántico) and Cúcuta (Norte de Santander), are currently home to a number of exchange students from countries including, Mexico, Peru, France, Argentina, and Colombia.
If you’re an international student who’s interested in studying at Universidad Simón Bolívar, you’ll need to:
- Verify your academic certificate with the Colombian Institute for the Evaluation of Education (ICFES) using the following link: http://www.icfes.gov.co/atencion-al-ciudadano/examenes-homologables.
- Submit a scanned copy of your passport
- Submit a scanned copy of your student visa (if not of Colombian nationality)
- Pay the necessary registration fees
Should your application be successful, we’ve established agreements that allow international students to arrive as exchange students for one academic semester and receive help with enrollment, accommodation and food. This is achieved through mobility platforms including the Ascun PILA Grant, PAME Grant from the Union of Latin American and Caribbean Universities (UDUAL), as well as Alianza del Pacífico.

100 percent of medical and surgical specialist graduates are in employment after completing their studies at Universidad Simón Bolívar. In addition, medical and surgical specialist graduates earn better salaries than their colleagues from other universities.
Furthermore, between 80.6 percent and 69.5 percent of graduates from other specializations have found employment.
