The origins of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW date back to 1816, to the creation of the Institute of Agronomy in Marymont, the first agricultural institution of higher education in Poland and only the fourth one in Europe. The Institute offered programs at two levels: the higher level, intended for the administrators and management, as well as for sons of large landowners, and the elementary level, for agricultural laborers.

The history of the Institute parallels the history of Poland. Repeatedly closed after the defeats of national uprisings, transferred to Puławy and later to Russia, it kept coming back under new names. To commemorate this event, the Academic Senate declared in 2000 this date as the Day of SGGW. In 1956, by the decision of the Council of Ministers and of the City of Warsaw, the University received a land grant in Ursynow whereto, by 2003, all faculties and departments have been transferred, thereby creating one of the most modern university campuses in Europe, both for its architecture and research equipment.

Currently, SGGW has a broad offering of courses in English, starting from the short ones within summer schools, research stays that can last up to several months for full study programmes. It hosts almost 20 000 students who are served by about 1300 academic teachers. Over 5% of our students are from abroad.

SGGW is a life sciences university. Research at the Universtiy is carried out by 16 institutes and teaching is provided by 13 faculties.  Our research and teaching activities focus primarily on issues related to agriculture, biology, horticulture, food and nutrition, forestry, veterinary medicine as well as disciplines that strongly support life sciences such as economics, social sciences, computer science, technology and engineering. We also offer research and didactic facilities that are at the level of those at the best life sciences universities in Europe, as well as excellent social and livingconditions. Our campus is one of the best organized facilities of this type in Poland. We offer more than 4000 dormitory places. Comfortable suites surrounded by a green environment are perfect to comfort the needs of international and domestic students. Our biggest pride is being awarded with the title of a university that is student friendly. Openness and hospitality towards our international guests are great values of our academic community.
