City, University of London offers a wide range of taught and research postgraduate degrees, with every member of City’s postgraduate community benefiting from outstanding academic staff, comprehensive student support and tailored career guidance. 

City is divided into six different academic Schools: 

Postgraduate study offers tangible benefits and real long-term value. It allows students to gain specialist knowledge of a specific subject, develop valuable transferable skills, including analytical thinking and research and presentation techniques, and grow their professional network to open any number of doors.  

One of City’s greatest strengths lies in its links to business and industry and expanding these links is central to its future strategy. City offers skill-focused degrees that embed employability within the curriculum and was recently ranked 6th in London for graduate prospects (Complete University Guide 2024). Alongside employability, City is focused on setting up new interdisciplinary research centres that will produce solutions to some of the biggest challenges that society faces.  

  • The Research Excellence Framework 2021 (published in May 2022) rated 86% of City research as world-leading 4* (40%) and internationally excellent 3* (46%) quality). 
  • City is 39th in the UK out of 129 universities according to the Times Higher Education rankings, an increase of 12 places since REF 2014.

Throughout the year, City hosts a range of on-campus and online events to give prospective students the opportunity to learn more about their course of interest, meet academics and staff, visit the campus and get further guidance on life at the University. City believes that to deliver world-leading education, students need world-class equipment and facilities. City has invested £150 million in responsive learning environments, new technologies, library and study spaces and its staff over the past ten years. 

City’s academic Schools boast state-of-the-art equipment where cutting-edge research is undertaken to industry standards and where students can gain knowledge and develop their skills. Specialist facilities include: 

  • Airbus cockpit simulator, microturbines and formula car simulator in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics. 
  • State-of-the-art 3D OCT camera used by City’s own opticians, City Sight, which is open to the public. 
  • A fully equipped recording studio, composition studio, performance space and rehearsal rooms in the Department of Performing Arts. 
  • A brand new building for The City Law School, featuring a dedicated law library and study spaces, a mock courtroom, and an in-house legal clinic. 

The Northampton Square library, situated within the University Building, encompasses five floors, providing a comprehensive resource hub for students and researchers alike. Additionally, there are specialist libraries for Bayes Business School (formerly Cass) and The City Law School. 

The libraries offer specialist support, extensive opening hours and access to a vast array of e-books, online journals, and databases, ensuring a wealth of academic material is readily available. With over 1,500 individual workspaces and around 200 group study areas, the libraries present an innovative learning environment that cater for both collaborative and individual study needs. 

Additionally, as part of the University of London, City students get access to a wide network of library, social and sports facilities.

  • Angel, in Islington, is a lively part of town known for its restaurants, independent boutiques and theatres. There's always fun to be had at both day and night.  
  • Trendy Shoreditch is full of creative spaces and vintage shops, not to mention iconic street art and the famous Columbia Road flower market.  
  • Clerkenwell is home to history museums and a hub for creative start-ups. This trendy area where Charles Dickens once lived also has some of the city's oldest pubs.  
  • Football fans will appreciate City's location, a stone's throw from both the Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal stadiums.

Applications for the majority of postgraduate courses are made directly to City through the online application system accessible from the relevant course webpage.  

Most courses do not have a fixed application deadline and operate on a rolling admission basis. Early applications are recommended, as competition for places is strong and applications close when the course is full, as offers are made upon receipt and assessment of the application.

Entry requirements 

Students will be considered for most postgraduate taught courses with a good Chinese bachelor’s degree from a recognised university. For some degrees, professional qualifications and employment experience may be required, but also may be considered alongside or instead of an undergraduate degree.  

Entry requirements vary by course for City’s postgraduate courses. Students who do not qualify for direct entry to City's courses, can opt to undertake a preparatory programme. Successful completion of a pre-master’s programme at one of City’s pathway provider partners guarantees entry into many City degrees, subject to students meeting grade requirements.
