Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) is a major internationalized university in South China for its global-minded faculty/students and its research on international languages, literature, culture, trade and strategic studies.

Dating back to 1965 when the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages was established and 1980 when the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade was founded, the University had its present form by merging the two in 1995, with the Guangdong College of Finance and Economics incorporated into the University in 2008. The University has three beautiful campuses with a total area of 153 hectares: the main campus -- the North Campus at the foot of the Baiyun Mountain, the South Campus in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center, and Dalang Campus.

The University has 25 faculties offering 72 programs in literature, economics, management, law, engineering, science, education and art for bachelor, master and doctoral degrees and post-doctoral research. With 26 foreign languages available, the University is the only one in South China that offers the greatest variety of foreign language programs and its foreign language and literature as academic discipline is among the best across the nation.

The University upholds the motto of Pursuit of Integrity, Practice and Cross-cultural Learning and defines as its mission the education of high-caliber citizens through the integration of content studies and foreign language training for globally minded graduates with international vision and social responsibility. The University serves  19,985 full-time undergraduate students, over 3,000 graduate students. It is one of the 19 universities worldwide qualified to provide high-end translation professionals to the United Nations and the only foreign studies-oriented university in the CAMPUS Asia program. It is a member of CIUTI (whose full name is International Standing Conference of University Institutes of Translators and Interpreters) and a member of FIT (International Federation of Translators).Also, it is the founder of WITTA (whose full name is World Interpreter and Translator Training Association). With its undergraduate students admitted in the first-round or early admission category through college examination system, the graduation index of this University’s graduates ranked top among the universities across China.

GDUFS is home to one national key research center for humanities and social sciences, 5 provincial-level key research centers and  several think-tanks for the government of Guangdong Province. The University publishes five academic journals of international or national impact: Modern Foreign Languages, International Economics & Trade Research, Journal of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Asia-Pacific Translation and   Intercultural Studies and Journal of Strategy & Decision-Making.

GDUFS is active in a full range of international cooperation and exchanges in education. To date, it has ties with 374 universities and academic/cultural institutions in 53 countries or regions. The University has co-established five Confucius Institutes overseas.

With its educational philosophy of “whole-person education and pursuit of excellence”, the University vigorously pursues the internationalization of its faculty, students, academic research and management in order to be a high-tier internationalized university of excellence.
