Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) stresses the integration of specialty education, foreign language learning, and hands-on practice while striving to train graduates of international caliber. We aim to produce individutals with global vision and innovative spirit. We are one of the first universities to be authorized by the Ministry of Education to award the Master’s and the Doctor’s degrees after the restoration of the graduate education system in 1979. Today GDUFS boasts of one state-level discipline and seven province-level disciplines. It has 1 postdoctoral program and 2 doctoral programs of the first-grade discipline and 12 doctoral programs of second-grade discipline. As well, it boasts of 12 postgraduate programs of the first-grade discipline and 47 postgraduate programs of the second-grade discipline and 11 postgraduate programs of the professional degree. It now serves 3150 doctoral and postgraduate candidates. It boasts of 1 education ministry-level base for humanities & social sciences research at the Center for the Research of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In the 4th evaluation of disciplines conducted by the Ministry of Education, the university came out on top across the country. The doctoral programs of the first-grade discipline cover more than 50 percent of the Bachelor-degree specialties and the province above-level disciplines cover approximately 80 percent of the Bachelor-degree specialties.
The university has greatly reformed the enrollment system. As a result, the quality of the candidates has improved and the admissions to the school have continued expanding. It has introduced the model of training all-round competent graduates through integrating foreign language learning and specialty education. Also, it pioneered an MPAcc class which integrates non-English language learning with accounting. The MA Program of International Governance Innovation was approved and fully funded by China Scholarship Council. It has established ties of exchange and cooperation with 268 universities and academic institutions from 38 countries and regions such as the United States and Britain. It has carried out joint postgraduate-level education with the University of Reading, the University of Leeds, and the Universidade de Coimbra.
Since our postgraduates have been deemed competent in terms of foreign language proficiency and professional knowledge, the university has been selected as one of 19 universities across the world qualified to supply interpreters and translators for the United Nations. In recent years our postgraduate students have achieved an employment rate or 100 percent.
