Lancaster University
About
Lancaster University is among the best in the UK. As well as being 132nd out of more than 1,000 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2022 we are currently ranked 11th in both The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide and the Complete University Guide 2022. The campus in North West England occupies a beautiful 560-acre green site, just three miles from Lancaster city centre. Across the campus, we offer exceptional learning facilities, from the modern labs and lecture theatres in our faculties, to the multi-million pound sports centre and outstanding library facilities. Lancaster is one of only a small number of leading UK universities to operate a college structure. There are nine colleges, each providing students with small close-knit communities and a “home from home”. Each college has its own history and traditions, and creates a more supportive student environment and opportunities to get involved in a wide range of activities. The University has won ‘Best University Halls’ in the National Student Housing Survey eight times since 2010. With almost 6,800 university rooms we can offer students a range of high quality, safe and comfortable accommodation on our campus or in the city. Lancaster has an outstanding record in graduate employment. Our graduates perform well in an increasingly competitive job market and are highly regarded by employers.
The Lancaster University campus offers students everything we think they will need. Facilities on campus include shops, cash machines (ATMs), hairdressers, a post office, restaurants, coffee shops, a theatre, cinema and art galleries. The library, which is set in the centre of campus, is a very popular space with students. Recently renovated and extended, the library offers a variety of clean, modern, connected work spaces (and we even have a tree inside!). The campus offers extensive sports facilities including a 25-metre swimming pool, 8.5 metre climbing wall and bouldering cave, two sports halls, two studios, a fully equipped fitness suite and a strength and conditioning room. If you prefer to take your exercise outdoors then you’ll find that our 560-acre campus has plenty of space for sport and recreation. We have all the usual facilities, such as tennis courts, an artificial cricket wicket and multiple sports pitches. However, if you want something less strenuous or some ‘time-out’ then try our ‘trim trail’ and woodland walk, which covers 2.6 miles around the campus and has 11 exercise stations along the route. You’ll have everything you need on campus, but you’ll quickly discover that the City of Lancaster is a wonderful neighbour. Its fascinating heritage and stunning architecture give student life an impressive setting. We boast a packed agenda of ambitious events; the region’s largest open-air music festival, Highest Point, is held in the shadow of the beautiful Ashton Memorial. Our eclectic collection of venues and spaces mean there is always something happening.
The colleges are central to student life at Lancaster. We have nine colleges and each has its own personality, but picking yours usually comes down to the type of place you want to live in and the facilities you need. Townhouses, studios, en suite rooms – whatever fits you. But it’s more than just a place to stay, you’ll have the chance to study and socialise there as well. So, when you’ve finished your work for the day, you can meet your friends in the social spaces, settle down to a film or even see a band play. If you can find the time in your schedule, your college’s events and activities can fill it. And, if you decide to live in town, you can always come and join in – your college is yours wherever you’re staying. Lancaster University Students’ Union is here to enhance every aspect of your time as a student –supporting your social life, your studies, your sporting activities, your hobbies and interests, and the causes you care about. Your activity groups are at the heart of life at Lancaster. With more than 200 clubs and societies covering a huge range of sports, activities, hobbies and causes, there’s something for everyone – we’re here to help you find it, making sure you find a sense of belonging. The Students’ Union also helps build a sense of community on campus by hosting a full calendar of events – including Roses (our annual sporting clash with the University of York) and Lancaster’s legendary ‘Extrav’ celebrations at the end of the year. You’ll have every possible opportunity to make international connections at Lancaster, meeting students from more than 100 countries – whether you’re doing group work, getting involved with one of our student societies or enjoying a night off at a big celebration. You might spend a few weeks abroad as part of your course, or even study for a whole academic year with one of our partner institutions around the world. And when you graduate, you’ll join an alumni network that touches every corner of the globe – putting a 170-country network at your fingertips.
Lancaster has a dedicated team of Admissions staff that manage applications and are on hand to help with any questions you might have about your application. We also have a specialist Visa and Immigration team to process visa applications and provide advice and guidance to you as you apply to study in the UK.
