The broad subject spectrum at Heidelberg University includes the humanities, law, the social and behavioural sciences, the life sciences, medicine and the natural sciences. At postgraduate level, Heidelberg University offers master’s degrees and PhDs. With approximately 100 master’s programmes it is possible to advance and deepen the knowledge gained in the bachelor’s programme or to expand into an affiliated subject area. Heidelberg University also provides a Master of Education to train and qualify prospective teachers for secondary schools. The university’s degree programmes are based on department-specific, interdisciplinary and practical goals for comprehensive academic education and for the students’ future careers.

At PhD level Heidelberg University offers two different models of doctoral training: individual doctoral training and doctoral training within a structured doctoral programme. Heidelberg University has established four graduate schools – in the natural and life sciences and in the humanities and social sciences – and various interdisciplinary research training groups. Doctoral candidates are supported and fostered by Heidelberg University’s Graduate Academy, which provides an excellent framework for both individual and structured doctoral training.
