Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas
About
The Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas (University of Informatics Sciences) was created in 2002. UCI (by its Spanish acronym) is specialized in IT-related areas of knowledge and its foundation was a strategic milestone to foster research and innovation in order to strengthen Cuban software development industry. It is based on a study-work educational model with direct academy-industry relations due to the conception of an intra-university industry for software development.
Three major courses are offered at UCI: Informatics Sciences Engineering, Bioinformatics Engineering and Cybersecurity Engineering; as well as a minor degree course in Network Administration and Computer Security. More than 15000 engineers have graduated and taken jobs in all fields of economy and society, with a considerable impact in extending IT application in the country. The postgraduate education system is wide and varied. It includes a PhD Program in Informatics and Master’s programs in Advanced Informatics, Software Quality, Informatics Project Management, Applied Medical Informatics and Virtual Education.
The University has 11 software development centers associated in a collaborative network, which operates under common rules and procedures in developing IT multidisciplinary projects with significant impact in areas such as citizen security, public health, industry, education, business administration, and telecommunications, among others. The software development process in this network has a CMMI Level 2 quality certification level. As UCI has a double capacity as academy and industry, transfer of research results into software innovation and development and into the teaching-learning process is ensured.
This University city, located to the west of Cuban capital city, covers an area of 268 hectares and has a modern infrastructure that supports all university processes. The university campus is characterized by academic, scientific and productive development, in an ecologically balanced environment. There is a wide cultural, sports and scientific movement, with a high impact through different events, and community projects both inside and outside campus, thus fostering integral education and social responsibility of future professionals.
