UCLouvain : a window open to the world Founded in 1425, UCLouvain has a history of great names : Erasmus (humanism), Vesalius (anatomy), Mercator (carthography), Georges Lemaitre (Big Bang theory), Jean Ladriere (philosophy), Christian de Duve (medicine Nobel prize, 1974), Andre Goffeau (decoding of the yeast genome), Benoit Lengele (World's first facial graft in 2006), Andre Berger (climate change), Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (member of the GIEC group awarded the 2007 Nobel prize), to name but a few, have all taught at Louvain. Today, UCLouvain welcomes students from 120 nationalities, as regular students and as exchange students. The two campuses host some 21,000 students and 5,000 staff. These campuses are easily accessible, and offer a pedestrian, green and secure environment with that distinctive european flavor. Student life is very active. UCLouvain is a comprehensive university and a research intensive institution, with a particular care for the quality of education. Graduating from UCLouvain means acquiring first class scientific training, but also building the soft skills useful for employment, like languages. At Master's level, nearly all programmes include the opportunity of an internship. The teaching language is French. However, most faculties also offer some courses in English. At Ph.D. level, in a number of doctoral schools, the working language is English.
