Doshisha University was founded in 1875 by Joseph Hardy Neesima (Jo Niijima), who became one of the six great educators of the Meiji era. Liberalism, Internationalism, and Christian Principles are the three educational principles since foundation, and students are encouraged to nurture a sense of freedom, independence, and conscience. Doshisha offers students a wide-ranging liberal arts education as well as studies in business and science. The university has faculties in Theology, Letters, Social Studies, Law, Economics, Commerce, Policy Studies, Culture and Information Science, Science and Engineering, Life and Medical Sciences, Health and Sports Science, Psychology, and Global Communications. In April 2013, the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies has just been launched.Furthermore, The Institute of the Liberal Arts, an undergraduate program taught entirely in English, was established in April 2011, attracting students from all over the world.Located in the ancient capital of Kyoto, Doshisha University is home for over 26,000 undergraduate students. Doshisha continues to develop as an international hub of higher education and research.
