About
National Chiao Tung University (“NCTU”) is a top research university in Taiwan as well as in East Asia. Located close to Hsinchu Science Park (HSP)--the “Silicon Valley” of Taiwan, the university has been an optimal hub of academic and industrial collaboration and a forerunner of science and technological innovations. Currently NCTU shows a strong motivation to move forward to becoming a “Great University” that respects the values of diversity, creativity and collaboration.
NCTU has been always at the forefront of the newest technologies. The research activities at NCTU started with the development of semiconductor technologies and establishment of the first semiconductor laboratory in Taiwan. This pioneer laboratory later fostered an entire ecosystem for the semiconductor industry in Taiwan, leading to renowned companies as derivatives, like TSMC, MediaTek, and UMC, just to name a few. Such a unique role has consolidated strong ties between NCTU and corporations, and benefited NCTU students and faculty members significantly for developing new research fields. Besides, it has established a distinguished alumni network, whose members comprise nearly two-thirds of the CEOs and general managers in HSP.
In the past decade, NCTU has set up new research directions like internet of things (IOT), bio-inspired information and communication technology (BIO-ICT), biomedical technologies, AI & green energy, intelligent hospital, etc. Through the exploitation of emergent technologies, many research fields at NCTU have achieved a leading position – Essential Science Indicators (ESI) top 1% – in the world. NCTU also plays an important role in international collaborations with foreign research institutions and corporation and thus makes profound impacts on the academia-industry relationship worldwide.
Today, the University is comprehensive university, composed of 12 colleges that offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Semiconductor Technology, Computer Science, Science, Biological Science and Technology, Photonics, AI & Green Energy, Management, Law, Humanities and Social Sciences, Hakka Studies. There are around 700+ teaching faculty members, 300+ research staff and 14,700+ students (including about 5,600 undergraduates and 9,100 graduates) in NCTU. Among them, more than 10% are international students.
