The University Of Santiago de Chile (USACH) is one of Chile’s most traditional and prestigious State higher education institutions. It was founded in 1849, as the Escuela de Artes y Oficios (EAO) - School of Arts and Crafts, which assumed the task of training professionals for national industrialization. It continued to grow into the Universidad Técnica del Estado (UTE) established in 1947, with eight regional campuses throughout the country. In 1981, the University was officially established as the Universidad de Santiago de Chile, with a sole 32-acre campus in the heart of Santiago, Chile’s capital city. The campus provides students and staff with 19 000 m2 of sports infrastructure, and 26 000 m2 of laboratories. The library system is made up of an extensive central library and 20 specialized faculty libraries. USACH delivers 64 undergraduate programs to over 20000 students. The University has seven faculties, which cover most areas of knowledge: Engineering, Humanities, Science, Business Administration and Economics, Chemistry and Biology, Medical Science, Technology, a School of Architecture and a Bachelor Program. Our graduate schools offer 38 master and 14 PhD programs. USACH´s commitment to social responsibility and social inclusion has enabled thousands of talented young people with restricted resources, access to quality education and excellence in academia. Underlying all of our academic endeavors is the belief that equal access to educational opportunities is the key to building a just society. The generation of knowledge and research is one of its mission areas and represents approximately ten percent of all national research. USACH is ranked second at a national level amongst all Chilean universities in patent registration. As an agent of active community outreach USACH offers a full season of concerts, and cultural programs such as exhibitions, lectures, theater, folk music and the only planetarium in the country.
