The University of Southern Brittany is a public university in France which is part of the Academy of Rennes. The university has a student body of approximately 8,500 and around 400 academic staff members, and is also affiliated with the European University of Brittany.
Teaching at the university is split across three campuses. The first is in Lorient, a town and seaport on the north-western coast of France. The second campus is located in the market town of Vannes, located about 100km from Nantes. Like Lorient, Vannes is also on the coast and has been an important strategic location in military conflicts across the centuries. The final university campus is in Pontivy, a mostly agricultural town. Notably, all road signs in Pontivy are written in both French and Breton, a language local to Brittany.
