Founded in 1878 by Serranus Clinton, the first Chief Justice of California, the University of California, Hastings College of the Law was California’s first law school. UC Hastings has been at the center of the legal community in the West for more than 120 years. The mission of the University of California Hastings College of the Law is to provide an academic program of the highest quality, based upon scholarship, teaching, and research, to a diverse student body. We work hard to assure our graduates have a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the law and are well trained for the multiplicity of roles that they will play in a society and profession that are subject to continually changing demands and needs. It might be the way we have built on our heritage to create one of the best law schools in the country. UC Hastings has a proud history. In the years following World War II, the College was known for its Sixty-Five Club, a group of eminent scholars and jurists who provided Hastings with one of the most distinguished faculties of any American law school.
