MangaloreUniversity was established on September 10, 1980 to cater to the highereducational needs of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu Districts. TheUniversity Campus is situated in a picturesque location and is a major centrefor advanced academic studies and research. It has been accredited by NAAC with‘A’ Grade and is a premier educational institution in the state. Mangalore University hasfour main academic faculties: commerce, arts, education and science &technology with 28 departments and 40 Postgraduate programmes.

TheUniversity Campus at Mangalagangothri is located at a distance of about 20 Km.southeast of the city of Mangalore. The campus is spread over an area of about333 acres and is on a high elevation overlooking the Arabian Sea on the oneside and the Western Ghats on the other. Since its establishment, theUniversity has made considerable progress in the field of higher education and research.The university isnotable for being the first one in India to offer bachelor's degree programs inthe following subjects:

• Fashion Design
• Apparel/Garment Design
• Leather Design & Technology
• Human Resource Development

Thecampus has hostel facilities for both men and women. The central facilities onthe campus include a well equipped Library, Computer Centre, University ScienceInstrumentation Centre, Microtron Centre, Centrefor Advanced Research in Environmental Radio Activity (CARER), Centre for Application of Radioisotopes and RadiationTechnology (CARRT), Health Centre, Directorate of Student Welfare,Yakshagana Kala Kendra and Mangala Auditorium. AResearch and Consultancy Promotion Cell (RCPC) has been constituted to promoteand strengthen research programmes of our University. An English MediumHigh School, a Pre-University College and a Degree college have been in operationsuccessfully. A Shopping complex and the University Employees Co-operativeSociety are located on the campus as also two well furnished guest houses. Canteen, Bank, Post Office, Transportation and other modern communicationfacilities are also available besides good indoor sports facilities and a modern gym.

Besidessports, short-term programmes for staff and students in Yoga are frequentlyconducted by the University. Lectures, workshops and training programmes areorganized under different endowment chairs. Co-curricular and culturalactivities reflecting the multicultural ambience of the region are conducted onthe campus. The Prasaranga unit is engaged in the dissemination of knowledgeand a separate cell to cater to the needs of SC and ST students is available. The campus has a large presence of international students hailing fromover 40 countries.
