About
Mangalore University was established on September 10, 1980 to cater to the higher educational needs of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu Districts. The University Campus is situated in a picturesque location and is a major centre for advanced academic studies and research. It has been accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ Grade and is a premier educational institution in the state. Mangalore University has four main academic faculties: commerce, arts, education and science & technology with 25 departments and 40 Postgraduate programmes.
The University Campus at Mangalagangothri is located at a distance of about 20 Km. southeast of the city of Mangalore. The campus is spread over an area of about 333 acres and is on a high elevation overlooking the Arabian Sea on the one side and the Western Ghats on the other. Since its establishment, the University has made considerable progress in the field of higher education and research. The university is notable for being the first one in India to offer bachelor's degree programs in the following subjects:
- Hotel Management & Tourism
- Fashion Design
- Apparel/Garment Design
- Leather Design & Technology
- Human Resource Development
The campus has hostel facilities for both men and women. The central facilities on the campus include a well equipped Library, Computer Centre, University Science Instrumentation Centre, Microtron Centre, Centre for Advanced Research in Environmental Radio Activity (CARER), Centre for Application of Radioisotopes and Radiation Technology (CARRT), Health Centre, Directorate of Student Welfare, Yakshagana Kala Kendra and Mangala Auditorium. A Research and Consultancy Promotion Cell (RCPC) has been constituted to promote and strengthen research programmes of our University. An English Medium High School, a Pre-University College and a Degree college have been in operation successfully. A Shopping complex and the University Employees Co-operative Society are located on the campus as also two well furnished guest houses. Canteen, Bank, Post Office, Transportation and other modern communication facilities are also available besides good indoor sports facilities and a modern gym.
Besides sports, short-term programmes for staff and students in Yoga are frequently conducted by the University. Lectures, workshops and training programmes are organized under different endowment chairs. Co-curricular and cultural activities reflecting the multicultural ambience of the region are conducted on the campus. The Prasaranga unit is engaged in the dissemination of knowledge and a separate cell to cater to the needs of SC and ST students is available. The campus has a large presence of international students hailing from over 40 countries.
