The history of the university began on July 5, 1952. For four decades, the institute has been one of the leading universities not only in the republic, but also in the USSR.
In 1991, Ust-Kamenogorsk Pedagogical Institute was transformed into the East Kazakhstan State University and became the third university in Kazakhstan - the same age as a sovereign state.
In October 2003, the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan was named after Sarsen Amanzholov, a scientist, a linguist and Turkologist.
The university is an active member of the Eurasian Association of Universities.
In September 2009, by the decision of the Collegium of the Observatory, the university was included in the list of 600 world university leaders, united around the Great Charter of Universities to implement the principles of the Bologna Agreement.
Currently, the university is integrating into the international educational space as a multidisciplinary (classical) research university, providing high quality educational services and the competitiveness of specialists and postgraduate education in accordance with a developed mission and development strategy.

Amanzolov East Kazakhstan State University research and educational activity includes the formation of a single cultural, educational, intellectual and innovative space of the University, ensuring the quality of lifelong education in accordance with global trends and principles of the Bologna process, active international cooperation and ensuring academic mobility of students and staff of the University.
