The McPherson Committee formed byGovt. of India, recommended the establishment of an institution for impartingeducation in the fields of Mining and Geology, whose report, submitted in 1920,formed the main basis for establishment of the Indian School of Mines (ISM),Dhanbad. ISM was formally opened on 9th December 1926, by Lord Irwin, the thenViceroy of India to address the need for trained manpower related to miningactivities in the country with disciplines of Mining and Applied Geology. In1967 it was granted the status of a Deemed to be University under Section 3 ofUGC Act, 1956.and came under direct control of MHRD in 1996. Since itsestablishment, the Institute has undergone considerable expansion of itsactivities, and presently it can be considered as a total technology educationinstitute.
The Institute has been declaredas Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad videS.O.2870(E) of No.2173, Part II Section 3 – Sub section (ii) of The Gazette of India dated 6thSeptember 2016. The academic profile of the Institute changed over the time tokeep abreast with the technological challenges and societal aspirations. TheInstitute has been in service of the nation for last 91 years contributingimmensely as a full-fledged technical institution of international acclaimoffering a host of programmes like B. Tech., M. Tech., MBA, Executive MBA, M.Sc. Tech, M.Sc., Integrated M.Sc. Tech, Integrated M. Tech, Dual Degree and B.E.for national and foreign national students. In addition the Institute offers fullas well as part time Ph. D. programmes, while also awarding D.Sc. as thehighest degree of academic achievement.
