The origin of the Technical University of Oruro dates back to 1876, the year in which the Faculty of Law began operating as a private company. Its creation was driven by the dynamics of knowledge as an expression of the thriving labor economic growth in Oruro at the end of the 19th century.
The Technical University of Oruro was founded by Law of October 15, 1892, with the name UNIVERSITY DISTRICT OF ORURO during the presidency of Dr. Mariano Baptista.
Subsequently, on November 12, 1937, during the government of the Military Junta presided over by the Tcnl. Germán Bush was dictated the Supreme Decree recognizing the autonomy of the UNIVERSITY DISTRICT OF ORURO with the name of UNIVERSITY OF SAN AGUSTIN.
The current denomination of UNIVERSIDAD TECNICA DE ORURO, was adopted on March 31, 1941, in the rectoral management of Dr. Josermo Murillo Vacarreza; in virtue of the great interest of the university bodies to guide and direct higher education in the department of Oruro to the technical branches linked to production.

The Technical University of Oruro, is a Higher Education Institution, governed by the University Autonomy that forms qualified professionals in the degree and postgraduate with high human quality, recovering the ancestral knowledge; through an academic offer of quality, which stimulates the development of teaching, research and the connection with the environment, contributing to human development and sustainable development, to the care and defense of human rights, in accordance with the academic model of the system of the Bolivian University.
