Maharishi Markandeshwar (Deemed to be University), Mullana, Ambala was established under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 with Gazette Notification dated 12th June, 2007 issued by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India on the recommendations of University Grants Commission and other concerned statutory bodies including Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India, Indian Nursing Council, All India Council for Technical Education, Bar Council of India, Pharmacys Council of India.

The journey to excellence commenced in 1995 with the establishment of Engineering College with approval of AICTE, State Government of Haryana in affiliation with Kurukshetra University. Within twenty five years, the MM Group with three Universities in the states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, has grown to a multi-faculty & multi-campus organisation offering more than 200 UG, PG as well as Ph.D programs in Professional and Vocational streams.

MMDU has been accredited by NAAC with Grade 'A' in December, 2015. The University has also been accredited as a Premier Institution by ASIC, UK in 2011 and 2015. MMDU ranks amongst top 200 Universities in India as per rankings released by MHRD, GOI under National Institutional Ranking Framework (2017, 2018 and 2019) within rank band 151-200 and its constitutient institution M.M. College of Pharmacy secured 41 rank in NIRF 2019. The B.Pharmacy programme has also been accredited by NBA.
